I suddenly awake to the ear-piercing sound of my alarm clock, and aimlessly hunt for the snooze button while an immediate thought dwells upon me: “Why am I doing this?” The clock reads 4:30 AM; all is dreary and silent. My fatigued body and consciousness feels completely depleted of strength. While trying to force my weary eyes open, still lying relaxed in my warm cocoon, an overwhelming sense of apathy consumes me. “Maybe I ought to call in sick.” Although despite all my pondering, and the hypnotic force of my bed, I manage to arise each morning at this barren hour to unite with my running group for brutal training. Long distance running, a sport and hobby the requires the integration of the mind and the body, aims to expand your physical ability by testing your intellectual determination. Everyday uncovers a new conflict to overtake your previous peak performance, a common mind over matter issue. I have felt first hand the misery of this struggle since I …show more content…
I do not run to obtain a fit figure, for my slim physique does not demand it. And this strenuous run is different than your average relaxing jog in gym class. I push myself daily to run farther and faster, to not only achieve my own personal goals, but also as a testament to other smokers who lack the assurance to improve their wellbeing. Somehow with vigorous effort and commitment, I run through the unconscious roads of my neighborhood with the realization that I am closely nearing the objectives that this lifestyle change demands. I constantly visualize a finish line that signifies the results of hard work and dedication. This line constantly reminds me that initiative and determination never go unnoticed, and all those dreadful mornings in which I struggled to escape my pleasant slumber has finally allowed me to feel alive

A global citizen is that who is willing to use its voice and knowledge to make a change. No one would ever be able to make a change in just one day, it is something that takes time and devotion. I’m really interested in diversity and I’m seeking to what is my role is as a world citizen. The fact that I’m searching for an international education is the proof of my desire to establish myself as a global citizen and my interest in the world issues.
... further distances. Runners are entitled to their own opinion, because everybody’s bodies are different and are more fit for running different levels of mileage. While those runners are training with low mileage, others who are against running low mileage because they believe that getting the body used to running further distances will improve their running. The above research gave plenty of examples of how there is a rebuttal going on where some runners believe that less training means more output, as well as how some believe that more training means more output. Examples are given throughout the paper to support both ideas.
A college degree is one of the best educations that a person can get. It not only develops your mind, but it helps to develop you as a person as well. No matter what kind of degree you receive, whether it be a bachelors, associates, or masters you are more likely to get a better job than without it or with just a high school diploma. Workers with a college degree will earn much more and are much less likely to be unemployed than those with only a high school diploma. This paper will argue that with a college degree you are more likely to get a higher paying job than without a degree. I will support this argument with multiple scholarly articles and other valid sources to further convince you.
Pursuing a higher education is a way of bettering yourself for the world. By bettering yourself, you can impact and change the lives of others, helping with education and being involved in the quality in which others learn to live. Higher education can help to create a work environment that will impact you and your family. Better education also means better wages to extend the value of your education by increasing your yearly income.
I still feel the definite momentum of my heart racing. The sweat from my brow is immanent while my cheeks burn with heat. Struggling to control each breath, I begin typing my prominent thoughts onto my keyboard. Without hesitation my mind soars with creative thoughts. Working out is an enjoyable and important part of my life; whether it be dancing to jazzy music or going to the gym to lift weights that are evidently too heavy for me, or even a short run around the neighborhood. Being a college student, I value my education as well as maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Exercising sparks new ideas and plausible solutions to different problems I may be facing. Why do I contrive unique ideas following an hour-long work out? I know their must be an explanation. How does physical activity impact a person’s cognitive thinking? These questions evolved into an inquiry that has pushed me to research and foster evidence to answer this inquisition. Moderate exercise enhances college students’ abilities to constitute creative thinking by promoting cognitive functions, relieving stress, and improving sleep patterns.
In chapter nine of Messages, assertiveness training is presented as a way “to express your feelings, thoughts, and wishes, and to stand up for your legitimate rights without violating the rights of others.” (McKay, Davis, Fanning, 2009, p. 125) According to McKay, Davis, and Fanning (2009), “assertiveness is a social behavior that can be learned” (p.125) Assertiveness that is presented in a way that is used to express ‘your’ feelings and not necessarily to interpret someone else’s connects directly with the single contingency method. As assumptions number four of the skills and tools model of communication states that communication skills are trainable like motor skills, assertiveness skills such as passiveness, aggressiveness, and assertiveness are presented in a way that may be taught to use in appropriate situations to depict your feelings and your wishes. The book differentiates between a skill that is similar to a personality trait, and assertiveness that can be acquired, which contradicts assumption number four because it suggests that learning to communicate is similar to learning jumping jacks. It also specifies that assertiveness is used to initiate your own message instead of another’s reaction.
Creative new training methods, developed by coaches, athletes and sport scientists, are aimed to help improve the quality and quantity of athletic training ( Kellmann, 2010, p.1). However, these methods have encountered a consistent set of barriers including overtraining ( Kellmann, 2010, p.1). Due to these barriers, the need for physical and mental recovery in athletics brought an increasing attention in practice and in research ( Kellmann, 2010, p.1).
Anxiety and Athletic Performance Introduction Athletes today need to be able to cope with the anxiety and pressure that is placed on them in the competitive world of sports. A large deal of research has been done on examining the relationship between anxiety and performance within the field of athletics. This paper is going to show that the mind of an athlete has a lot to do with the result of the particular event. In order to show that anxiety in athletes is a significant problem, this paper is going to be set up in three different areas in order to explain exactly how anxiety affects the athlete. The first section of the paper is going to explain the history and terminology of the study of anxiety in athletes.
My primary personal thinking style is the Achievement Style, which is one of the constructive styles. Constructive Styles pertain to self-enhancing behaviors in ways of thinking, which determine a person’s level of satisfaction. These styles also pertain to the capability of effectively working with people, building healthy relationships, and being proficient at the accomplishment of tasks.
Value of a college education Everyone seems to have a different view of what college does for an individual. Some have a negative view, while others have a more positive view. There are those who don’t believe in getting a college education because they deem it a waste of time and money. Not so long ago, college was more for elite students rather than everyone. Now days its pushed onto every high schooler to attend college.
By running competitively one can increase the capacity of their brain; running boosts one’s ability to learn and has been known to help people to be able to focus better. Competitive running has extremely good benefits on the cognitive abilities of people who take part in the sport. Scientists studying the effects or running on cognitive abilities have found that competitive runners outperformed recreational runners in the abilities requiring motor inhibition, competitive runners were also found to be better at multitasking, and successfully ignoring information that was not necessarily relevant. Competitive running is shown to have bigger impacts on the brain than recreational running; as this may be true, running in general has still been
Self-determination theory is one that assumes all humans are born with an innate drive to better oneself, basically becoming self-actualized, which is referred to as full-functioning. In self-determination theory, or SDT, full-functioning is characterized as “being aware and mindful, acting autonomously…, and pursuing and attaining intrinsic life goals” (Deci, Ryan, and, Guay 2013). SDT describes three autonomous behaviors: intrinsically motivated, extrinsically motivated, and emotionally motivated. SDT also describes three psychological basic needs of every human: the needs for competency, autonomy, and relatedness. The need for competency causes people to try tasks slightly tougher than they can currently manage, in order to improve upon
Determination Everyone has been determined to do something at one point in their lives, but what does determination really mean? What one person is determined to do, another person might not care about, or could be determined to do it at a different extent. Determination comes from within, so it can vary from person to person. Per the dictionary, determination is “the act of coming to a decision or of fixing or settling a purpose” (“Determination”). When you have a strong need or want to do something, whether it be for yourself or someone else, you are determined.
Persistence is more important than ability to determine a person’s success. When there is a person who wants to do their goal or task they have to be able to work hard for their goal, they need to be dedicated to the goal, and no matter what happens they can’t give up which means that they have to keep going and going until they have finally achieved what they wanted to achieve. So this shows that a great successor needs to be very persistent to achieve and go beyond what they want to do, they need to drive themselves to success, but most of all they need to be patient and have time.
