Nothing could have prepared me for emotional impact that came with completing my gold award. I was on the home stretch for completing the highest award that could be presented to a girl scout. For my project I had decided to make presents for the terminally ill children staying in the hospital. There I was 18 years old and ready to finally finish up the last requirement of my project; handing off the presents. At least I thought I was ready. Most of the children were sleeping so I gave them to the parents but the children that were awake I was able to give them personally. There was one little girl whose face is ingrained in my mind. I chose biology because it came so naturally to me, what else could I do but science. At the time I knew only that I wanted to end up in the medical field, which was vague and I knew I needed to narrow that down if I ever wanted to finish my undergraduate degree. There were so many of us in my freshman biology class. We were all going to be doctors! I saw it in my mind, all my friends and I working in a big hospital just like all the hospital drama shows. That dream ended quickly when many of my friends branched off and no longer wanted the medical route. I strove on knowing that if I wanted to end up doing great things I had to work hard. I did work hard both in school and my job. I was fortunate enough to have the government pay for most of my school however I had to take out loans, and if I wanted to afford groceries and rent I had to work at least 20 hours a week. This took a lot of discipline as I saw my friends going out every night or participating in awesome volunteering opportunities. I knew that I was doing what was the right way for me so I worked all through college. In the end it paid off, I kept a pretty high GPA and did not end up with a harrowing amount of
