Classroom Observation
Maria and I were going to observe a kindergarten classroom social studies class that combined their lesson with a first grade class. We were scheduled to arrive at 2 PM. When I arrived at 1:50 PM, Maria was waiting outside the school and informed me that she had already gone in and was told that there was going to be a fire drill in just a few minutes. We waited for the fire drill to finish and then went into the class. The time was about 2:10 at this point, so the teachers were running a little behind.
When we entered the room it was empty, we had obviously beat the students back from the fire drill. This gave us time to look around. The kindergarten room was brightly decorated with lots of posters and student's art work. The kids were working on colors because there was a strip on top of the blackboard that had the colors and things we might see in that color. The student's desks were arranged in two rows, pushed together and facing each other.
There were about twelve seats in each group, so there were about 24 students in the class. Apparently, the class had just been returning from a trip to the school library when the fire drill went off, so when they came in they were still carrying their library books. The students were asked to take their seats and they did so quietly. Everyone's eye...
In first grade, my teacher Ms. Chile walked our class to the restrooms before we went to lunch and we lined up in front of the bathrooms and she let us go in four at a time. I was in line and this girl kept talking to me and I would respond. Ms. Chile told me to stand on the wall and not talk. I sat down
It was 8:45am on Tuesday, October 20th, 2015: The toddler classroom environment is open and well organized. The room has three sections. When first entering the room the first area near the door is open. A tan carpeted floor covers the area. To the right of the door, was a metal trashcan with a lid. The room leads into an open back room where the changing table is. To the right of the changing table is a small bathroom with off-white painted walls. The walls have a few pink and purple flowers painted on. The changing table has a bottom shelf underneath to hold the various sized diapers. Next to the changing table is a wooden shelf that held other supplies such as baby wipes, cleaning wipes, more packages of diapers, and some extra soft
He gets up and jumps up and down saying “ribbit ribbit”. He goes to the bathroom and comes back with wet pants, the assistant hands him a new pair of sweatpants to wear but he moves his head side to say, saying “no it has a hole”. Girl in white and blue sweatsuit sits next to teacher the majority of the observation period, she is holding crayons on her hands and gives them to the teacher when she asks for them. She gets up walks around the table and looks over the other children’s shoulder, she holds out one crayon with her right hand to a
I was a typical 6th grader with a love for social time and hatred towards pointless homework. As I was tapping my foot on my creaking wooden desk with my book opened pretending to read, Mr. Daniels was watching over me like a bird that just gave birth to chicken eggs. I had a feeling she was going to ask me a question about what I was reading. I realized from that point on to always trust my instincts. Mrs. Daniels tall toothpick shaped body leaned over and asked me to summarize the first chapter in front of the whole class. Due to not even beginning to read the first page I told her I did not even know where to begin. Since I was not prepared for class, not participating, and being rude about my task at hand I received a punishment. My punishment was every week I had to write a summary in my own words about the chapter I had read. My eyes rolled in the back of my head so far I didn't know if they would ever go back to normal. I knew my life was over at this
Alfred Adler was born in 1870, in Vienna. He was sickly and at the age of 4 almost died of pneumonia. Due to his sickness, his doctor lost hope and his mother coddled him. Also, Adler’s teacher told his father that he would only be a shoemaker. Though Adler’s early childhood was not enjoyable, he shaped his
There is a total of twenty-four students in the building. Finally, the students enter a room, are told to pick up a name tag, and sign in according to eye color. Once this
At 9:30 am, observation last 10 minutes. Kevin was in the sink area. He just finished washing his hands. The teacher called Kevin to go sit in circle time. All the other children were already sitting down in the carpet area.
Adler said that he felt that his early childhood problems led to his success in his work as a physician. Around the time Adler turned 18 he headed to the University of Vienna Medical School, having great success there he graduated and received his degree in 1895. Not long after, he and his wife felt the need to leave the country. Vienna was coming under rein of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi army. Vienna was not a safe place to call home during this time. Adler and his wife decided to pick up their items and head to America, they believed that New York would be a great fit for the two.
“Educational practice is necessarily based on the assumption that students are willing to engage in educational activities that they will lend their cooperation and support to the process in their education. Students who do not offer such cooperation, who are unmotivated, present significant challenges” (Williams and Ivey, 2001, 75). High school school-children show the most trouble with cooperation and motivation; they only have a few more years of schooling and for some pupils that is the end of their education. That was one of the main reasons why I wanted to observe a high school classroom; the other main reason is because I have actually considered teaching high school grades. I observed Ms. Edith Stone and her Algebra II mathematics classroom.
The infant classroom that created includes a door; so that people can enter and exit. On the right side of the door, there is a coat and belongings rack; so that once people come in they can place their belongings there. Next, to the coat and belongings rack there is a bookshelf with books the shelves so that educators and /caregivers can read to the infants. On the left side of the classroom wall, there is a changing table with drawers underneath and stairs on the side so that toddler can climb up to the changing table. The purpose of the drawers underneath the changing table so that teacher is able to take out any supplies needed for changing the child beforehand.
Alfred Adler was born on February 7th, 1870 in what is now Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus, Vienna, Austria. He also grew up there with six siblings, one of which died beside him in bed when he was only three years old. He was the second child of his father who was a Jewish grain merchant. He was also an active child who was very popular, but early on he developed rickets and was subsequently kept from walking until he was four. When he came down with pneumonia at age four he heard a doctor say to his father, "Your boy is lost" and at he decided to become a physician. He was also very interested in psychology, sociology and philosophy. He studied at the University of Vienna and specialized as an eye doctor and then later in neurology and psychiatry. He began his career as an ophthalmologist, but quickly switched to general practice on mainly circus performers due to his office’s proximity to a combination amusement park and
In electing to observe a kindergarten class, I was hoping to see ‘real world’ examples of the social development, personality types and cognitive variation found within the beginning stages of “Middle Childhood” as discussed within our text.
A kindergarten class offers a more conventional and integrated learning than the preschool environment. A kindergarten teacher will still stimulate their student’s curiosity about the world around them while getting them used to a structured classroom setting. They are...
The school that I visited was new. It was the first year of the school opening. The school board had combined two schools into one, so the students had to adjust to their new environments and new individuals. They seemed to be getting along well with each other. Since the school is new the teacher has to adjust to new problems that araise. Times for the subjects and times for using the computer labs change. So the teacher must always be fixable for anything. In this observation of this classroom I learned about the enjoyment of teaching. How you have to adapt to each of the students.
The students that I observed in the classroom were of middle to high school. I went to see 8th, freshman, 10th , and seniors classes, they seemed excited and very curious to why I was there. The middle school was more alive and rambunctious while I observed them. The High school kids were more relaxed, more comical. Some were paying attention while others seemed tuned out to the lecture or involved in socialization with friends within the class. By the end of the class Mr. Hasgil had restored the attention of everyone by using tactics such as history jeopardy with candy as the prize with the high school kids. In both he middle school and high school the kids were mostly Caucasian with a mixture of black, Asian , and Hispanic in the classes.
