Communication is an essential part of every classroom. Whatever the communication method is each of them are vital to the effectiveness of a teacher and overall successful classroom. Communication can come in many different forms: one important form is parent to teacher communication with concerns pertaining to their children. Another is teacher to child in order to redirect or instruct. My current placement is a general education first grade classroom. My mentor teacher believes whole-heartedly that strong communication is the most effective way to support the students that are struggling in school.

This is present when a teacher instructs the whole class to act a certain way or to complete a certain task. In my placement classroom, my mentor teacher uses many different verbal commands in her classroom with the students. When lining up she says “I am looking for my 4-S line (silent, still, straight, and smiling).” In the hallway she directs the students and really gets their attention by saying “I am looking for someone that is really showing me a 4-S line to move their clip up when we get back to the room.” She generally uses verbal communication in order to express her expectations for the students’ behavior and participation. When sitting on the rug during story time, our students can oftentimes get wiggly and distracted. One form of verbal communication that she commonly uses is “I am going to close my eyes, when I open them everyone is going to be sitting still and crisscross applesauce with their hands in their laps.” The effectiveness of my mentor teacher’s direct expectations is unbelievable. Her students are very responsive to her expectations for classroom behavior and actions. Teacher to class communication is also present during her lessons. If we are working on a problem that she knows everyone should know the answer to she says “I want everyone to repeat the answer.” This method is effective due to the directness of it.
