Effective communication is a key principle for developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults. By ensuring that communication is effective it provides clarity on what behaviour is expected and a clear understanding of the tasks. In providing this children and young people will feel they are able to join in and it also provides positive experiences in variety of situations. The result is children will feel more at ease within the school setting and with those around them. By listening to what a child, young person or adult has to say a sense of value and self-worth can be achieved, which forms another factor in developing positive relationships, trust. People need to be able to feel free to express their feelings and not be given the impression that they are being judged. Listening Listen even when you feel what the other person is saying isn't important; the likelihood is that it is important to them and you should give them the respect and courtesy of really listening. This also models the respect and courtesy that you would like them to display. Remembering When building relationships with others it is vital that you remember information that is important to them. This information is usually personal; things such as remembering the name of their pet or an out of school activity will make them feel valued by you. Respect We live in a society that consists of a number of different cultures, values, views and beliefs. Everyone is entitled to have their own and it is important to respect that and not make others feel that theirs are any less important than your own.

There are many ways which help build rapport with children and young people. One of them is to ensure to actively listen to what they are saying. There may be times were you unintentionally brush aside what a child is saying perhaps it is because you are preoccupied or tired, however, even this can be enough to make a child feel unvalued. Being responded to appropriately reinforces a child's self-esteem. This will in turn help build a trusting relationship. Talking with children, asking and answering questions also helps build their language skills. If pupils are distressed and need to talk about it, they will more likely open up to the person who has made them feel that they have a voice. This is why it is very important to build a respectful and trusting relationship with students, as it can have an impact on most areas of development.
We need to communicate with children to to build a positive relationship which will then help to develop the childs confidence, feelings of self worth and aid them to be able to build good relationships wot others. In addition to this it is needed to provide emotional security which can be done by showing a genuine interest in what the children have to say as well as providing comfort when the children are upset. It is mainly needed to to encourage the childrens development as it is essential for learning, play and social interaction.
According to Goddard and Walton (2012) the most crucial skills required by any person working with children are communication skills, this can be seen from the fact that communication heads the list of core skills required by practitioners in early years(CWDC, 2010 cited in Rose and Rogers, 2012). My communication skills are what made this situation an example of good practice when working at my placement. This is since, it first helped to create a good relationship with the child and it allowed him to gain trust of me. To highlight how important relationship with children is recognised for being one of the four groups of Early Years Professional Standards (DCSF, 2008), this is because the significance of a good relationship with the child helps support their learning and development (Johnson, 2010).
