Civil Rights Movement American history has shaped the country as a whole, and continues to change day by day. When trying to consider the most important turning point in recent American history, one most consider many different events that have taken place. From Civil War starting in 1860 to having the first ever African American President elected in 2008, America had come a long way. It is hard to try and pin point one specific turning point that can be considered as the most important; however, in my opinion, I believe that the Civil Rights Movement is the most crucial time in American history, and is arguably the most important turning point. The Civil Rights Movement was a critical time for the United States, lasting from 1954-1968. The main goal for this time period was the achieve equality and to have the same rights as the whites, including job opportunities, housing, schooling, as well as the right to vote and other basic rights every other United States citizen had. While many events contributed to the accomplishments of the Civil Rights Movement, there are two in particular that shaped the movement as a whole. This includes the Montgomery Bus Boycotts and Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. I chose these to events to represent the movement as a whole because they are some of the non-violent events that occurred, and to me these were the most influential of all.
