During the Civil Rights Era in the United States, groups and individuals worked together to bring an end to racial segregation and unequal treatment of minorities. This imbalance in power only fueled blacks - as well as other minorities - to fight back and obtain the freedoms that they were entitled to. Questions can always arise from progress -- why hasn’t the federal government further protected the right of women? Should illegal immigrants be given the same protection that US citizens are? Is it even the job of the government to protect the rights of gay citizens or are blacks entitled to as much as they perceive? Nevertheless, civil rights have come a long way since the year 1940 with women’s equality reaching an all time high, evolving immigration rights, marriage equality expanding across the U.S., and economic, social, and educational gaps continuing to close between blacks and whites.
When women were granted the right to vote in the year 1920, they weren’t suddenly placed on the same playing field as men. A continuous bombardment of inequality and discrimination battered women, especially in the workplace. Although some progress has been made on closing the gap between men and women’s earnings since the Equal Pay Act’s Passage in 1963, women on average still only make 80 cents to every dollar earned by white men. African American women bare the discrimination even more so by being barred by both their sex and their color -- earning nearly 65 cents, still better than Hispanic women who earn 52 cents to their white counterparts. “Pay discrimination is just one type of barrier faced by women seeking equal employment opportunity. Contrary to popular belief, not everything is about women. After the tragic event that occurred on 9/11, the United States became much more resistant and suspicious of immigrants. The issue of illegal immigrants has since become a pressing issue over the past few years and many states, specifically New Mexico, have begun passing laws which target specific groups. These outsiders aren’t just susceptible to laws diminishing their rights, but are amongst Assimilation amongst these newly arrived illegal immigrants happens at a faster pace than once believed. The SAD, or standard American diet, is completely foreign and effectively damages the health of these new-comers. This imbalance tends to affect immigrants at a disproportionately higher rate than Americans who were raised upon this diet, even though it’s not quite beneficial to anyone.
