China’s water supply is running out faster than it can be replaced. Water is being polluted by the environment, wasted because of the law, and a lot of water is being used due to it's growing industry. What is driving China’s water scarcity crisis? China's water scarcity crisis is mainly caused by the government mispricing water, industrialization, and urbanization.

The Chinese government is mispricing water. The pricing of water in China has always been set by the government rather than supply and demand-based prices (Document F). Therefore, the price is usually low instead of a higher price due to the fact that the government does not want to make any citizens troubled over the high price of water. Because of these low prices, citizens would see little to no need to save water (Document F). China's citizens realize because water is not priced as high if they waste water, it will not seem like throwing money away. …show more content…

In 1980, China used approximately 450 billions of cubic meters of water, but in 2030, China is forecasted to use 800 billions of cubic meters of water (Document C.) This shows that each year, China's industry expands and more water is needed. In the year 2013, about 70% of its power was generated from coal, and coal-fired power plants power the factories that make up China's entire manufacturing base (Document D). Coal power requires an abundance of water to create, so a lot of water will be essential to produce all the coal power
