Associates Degree of Nursing Student Learning Objective Three
The School of Nursing at Ivy Tech has designed eight general education outcomes to provide students with the tools to become successful nurses. To complete the program, the student must meet each learning objective prior to graduation. In this paper, the author is going to reflect on how learning objective three outlined by the School of Nursing has been meet. (Ivy Tech Community College School of Nursing, 2013, p. 12)
Objective Three

Part of the curriculum required me to develop and utilize patient care plans which strengthened my skills in critical thinking and problem solving. As Nurse I’m going to utilize the skills I learned as student. It is my goal to provide my patients with individualized holistic care which will be mindful that all aspects of the patient are important body, mind, spiritual beliefs and cultural practices. During my Obstetric (OB) clinical rotation I developed a mother baby couplet care plan. The care I provided was for a Hispanic mother and her Newborn. I followed the steps of the nursing process as outlined above and included the patient’s family unit in the plan of care. The family was Spanish speaking only therefore an interpreter was called to translate to avoid language barriers. My focus was to ensure that there was no abnormalities postpartum bleeding, emotional distress, postpartum depression and teaching was focused on self-care and newborn care. In comparison to the care plan I developed for the newborn were my priority was nutrition since the baby was born hypoglycemic at birth increasing the risk of ineffective thermoregulation and injury to the baby. I considered cultural aspects including the balance between opposing forces. In my case the hot v.s. cold foods. I assessed for spiritual needs of the patient and provided all information in Spanish for the new mother to take
