The Case Against The Black Lives Matter Movement Black Lives Matter is a protest movement against white police officers shootings of black people and the perceived racial biases in law enforcement. The group’s protests have sparked damage and violence in numerous cities. While Black Lives Matter correctly points out the nation’s racism, the movement does so in a manner that instigates violence, threatens the lives of police officers, and ignores the main cause behind black homicides. Black Lives Matter is right to shine light on the disproportionately high death rate of black people, however their matters of doing so often incites violence and damage to innocent victims. Police officers, for the most part, are people who put their lives on the line in order to protect our communities. While there may be a few bad cops out there, the majority of them are likely good. However, while Black Lives Matter points out the trend of black deaths, all police officers tend to get blamed. Violence against police officers has been on the rise; nearly 2 times as many police officers died of gunshot wounds in 2016 as compared to 2013 (“Causes of Law Enforcement Deaths”). And nearly half of police killers in the past decade are black males, even though black males make up only around 6 percent of the US population (Donald). This violence could be in response to the anti-cop mindset movements like Black Lives Matter bring, due to protests after every unarmed black man gets killed. Not only that, the deaths may also be in part to officers hesitating in deadly situations out of fear of becoming Black Lives Matter next target. One officer remarked, after an assailant assaulted him with his own gun, that he “hesitated because [he] didn’t want to be in the media” and that, “A lot of officers are being too cautious because of what’s going on in the media” (Wyllie). Police officers are bound to make rare mistakes, but if all police officers start hesitating in response to their negative portrayal in the media, officer deaths are going to continue to
