The biopsychosocial model was developed in 1977 by George Engel. Engel published an article calling for a new medical model. He said the BPS model would be an integrated approach to medical problems with the capability of moving from the molecular to the societal level of analysis and intervention. The BPS is the clinical collaboration where the psychologist and physician team up and provide comprehensive care for patients. Medicine and psychology have a long running tradition of mind and body being separate and are analyzed separately when healthy and diagnosed and treated separately when sick. Few people experience physical and psychological experiences as separate things. Our biological, psychological, and social experiences interact with each other in complex ways. Complex problems require multiple providers. Together physicians and psychologists can implement a biopsychosocial approach to a wide range of difficulties related to health and illness. Patients need physicians and psychologists to interact with each other. Collaboration allows for more comprehensive care by giving patients access to intensive treatment for difficult emotional and psychosomatic problems. A physician can offer to lower fears and increase motivation in a patient. They can pave the way for a successful connection between a patient, family and psychologist. A physician can also offer info about the patient’s disease and can educate the psychologist about the disease. A psychologist can offer particular attention to the psychosocial levels of an illness that a patient has. They can assist the physician in understanding the psychological aspects.
