The Barclays Center, located in Downtown Brooklyn in New York City, is a major sports and entertainment arena completed in 2012. What makes it truly unique when compared to other large structures and sports arenas in NYC and beyond is its commitment to sustainability and the various green technologies incorporated into the design and construction of the arena. During the construction period, eighty-five percent of on-site generated construction waste was diverted from landfills and fifty-six percent of the building materials were made of recycled materials, reducing the arena’s contribution on overcrowded and greenhouse-gas producing landfills, even before its opening to the public. Not only does the roof create a refuge for migrating birds and foraging bees in a densely urbanized area, but its also retains massive quantities of storm water, reducing the pressure on NYC’s combined sewer system, helping prevent sewer overflows into local bodies of water like the East River and Gowanus Canal. These overflows are detrimental to aquatic flora and fauna, Figure 1: Green Roof of the Barclays Center. and produce foul-smelling, unattractive waterfronts. The roof also captures carbon dioxide and air pollutants while reducing heating and cooling costs by acting as an insulator between the stadium and outdoor conditions. The roof was carefully planned and highly engineered to include plant species that maximize water retention and evapotranspiration, while remaining well supported by the structural system of the arena. The Barclays Center is a prime example of the new environmentally conscious engineering solutions transforming the Civil/Environmental Engineering industry, and I am excited to see where this movement goes next (and to be a part of this future)! Oculus The Oculus is a new transportation hub and shopping destination in the heart of the World Trade Center in Manhattan, NYC.
The multi-purpose arena that I have chosen to evaluate is Boston University’s Agganis Arena. This arena is considered to be the next generation of Boston sports and entertainment by incorporating the latest multimedia technologies and providing the finest possible sight lines and views of the action. The arena is located within Boston University's new $225 million John Hancock Student Village, a 10-acre hub of activity designed to be the thriving center of student life and athletics, Agganis Arena is a state-of-the-art, multipurpose sports and entertainment center scheduled to open in January 2005. A 290,000-square-foot premier venue with 6,300 seats for hockey and ice shows, the Arena is expandable to over 7,200 seats for concerts, sporting events, and family shows.

Dallas Love Field (DAL) located in Dallas, Texas has roots dating back to the early 1900s. DAL was a military airfield maintained by the U.S. Army to train pilots. In 1913, First Lieutenant Moss Lee Love was killed during a training flight in San Diego, California. The U.S. Army honored Lieutenant Love by naming the Texas military airfield, “Love Field” on October 19, 1917 (DAL, n.d.). In 1928 the city of Dallas purchased a large amount of land, which included Love Field (DAL, n.d.).
Washington Nationals is a baseball team based in Washington D.C, but they were originally from Montreal, Canada and they were known as Montreal Expos. However, the Expos moved to Washington D.C and become the Nationals in 2005. This means the Nationals were from outside of the United States. The Nationals had number of reactions when they decide to move to Washington D.C. Either by citizens of Washington D.C or politicians had some sort of reaction toward the Nationals. I stood at the front gate of Fenway park, home of the Boston Red Sox, where the Green Monster stands tall, the year of 2013. As soon as I walked in through the front gate, the warm smell of hot buttery popcorn made my mouth water with comfort. This familiar smell brought me back to the times I went to baseball games with my Dad and grandfather. The spots of spilled soda stains stick and sizzle on the cold hard concrete floors surrounding the stadium. The steam of a freshly boiled hot dog fills my nostrils with delight. A few moments later the umpire had a scratchy voice that emitted through the stadium and announced, “Play Ball”. Then the fans all seated waiting for the game to begin. All of those names have etched themselves in a foundation of sports that the sport of baseball is built upon. What do they all have in common? They are all New York Yankees. The New York Yankees are one of not only the United States’, but also the entire world’s most renowned and oldest sport franchises. Originally one of the eight charter teams in the AL conference, the Yankees began their franchise in Baltimore, Maryland in 1901. They were originally the Orioles, before moving to New York City and adopting the name “Highlanders” in 1903. They began playing their games at Hilltop Park, located in Manhattan.
I stood yesterday afternoon engaged in the immense time consuming game of baseball. I stood there contemplating on what ideas, mainly about baseball, were being distorted and confused. Then it hit me…
I had a chance to visit this building and as I stood under the edge of the building looking upward I was amazed by the beauty and precision, and stunned by the size and splendor. Inside I could not get past the entrance and a guard told me I wasn’t allowed to take pictures. The interior with its light colored marble walls and double height ceiling is breathtaking, I stood there and I felt a tremble run through my body. I can honestly say this is one of my favorite buildings in New York.
One of NBA’s all time All Star favorites, Michael Jordan, was not just about basketball all his life. Experiences in his childhood and early teens brought him to that life. His actions as an adult got him to where he is now...a millionaire. Michael Jordan was one of the best basketball players who had some bumps in his life, but overcame them to become a successful man.
In conclusion, the designers and builders of the tower have an undesirable job: creating a building that is functional, modern, sustainable and unique. At the same time it is honoring the memory of the people that died in and around the buildings that stood there before. While the green sustainable features have been criticized for being too expensive, they will do more than save just water, electricity and emissions. They and the grace of the building will inspire a generation of green and safe skyscrapers for the twenty-first century. This building has become one of the safest, environmentally friendly and expensive ever built, but as critics slate the building for various reasons, one cannot take away the determination through political, social and economic status that designers and workers have created such a beautiful building with great meaning.
Globally, green buildings are being recognised and accredited, leading to the introduction of various tools and indices with one common objective that is to evaluate, measure, distinguish and sets apart this uniquely designed buildings from the rest. Sustainable design seeks to reduce negative impacts on the environment, the health and comfort of building occupants, thereby improving building performance. The basic objects of sustainability are to reduce consumption of non-renewable resources, minimal waste, and create healthy, productive environments (“Sustainable Design”). Focusing primarily on the sustainable design principles, there are five, including: low-impact materials, energy efficiency, quality and durability, design for reuse and recycling, and renewability. As sustainability appears to become the necessary trend in architecture, the question concerning the cost versus outcome of “going green” really an investment or a waste of time and money comes to mind. With our research provided below, we believe the expenses may truly be with the investment in the end.

The beginnings of today's green revolution can be traced back to the environmental awareness of the 1960s and European design. New construction techniques have lead to the development of innovative materials and design concepts. Green buildings are designed, constructed and commissioned to ensure they are healthy for their occupants. Successfully designed green projects can involve an extensive array of factors, ranging from the resourceful use of materials, to careful consideration of function, climate, and location.
