The Barclays Center, located in Downtown Brooklyn in New York City, is a major sports and entertainment arena completed in 2012. What makes it truly unique when compared to other large structures and sports arenas in NYC and beyond is its commitment to sustainability and the various green technologies incorporated into the design and construction of the arena. During the construction period, eighty-five percent of on-site generated construction waste was diverted from landfills and fifty-six percent of the building materials were made of recycled materials, reducing the arena’s contribution on overcrowded and greenhouse-gas producing landfills, even before its opening to the public. Not only does the roof create a refuge for migrating birds and foraging bees in a densely urbanized area, but its also retains massive quantities of storm water, reducing the pressure on NYC’s combined sewer system, helping prevent sewer overflows into local bodies of water like the East River and Gowanus Canal. These overflows are detrimental to aquatic flora and fauna, Figure 1: Green Roof of the Barclays Center. and produce foul-smelling, unattractive waterfronts. The roof also captures carbon dioxide and air pollutants while reducing heating and cooling costs by acting as an insulator between the stadium and outdoor conditions. The roof was carefully planned and highly engineered to include plant species that maximize water retention and evapotranspiration, while remaining well supported by the structural system of the arena. The Barclays Center is a prime example of the new environmentally conscious engineering solutions transforming the Civil/Environmental Engineering industry, and I am excited to see where this movement goes next (and to be a part of this future)!
