Throughout four different text there is a recurring idea that connects to how dreams motivate people to improve themselves. These four texts are, the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the film The Great Gatsby directed by Baz Luremann, the documentary Hoop Dreams by Steven James and the film Sweeney Todd directed by Tim Burton.
The novella Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, connects to the idea of dreams motivate people to improve themselves. It does this throughout the text when George is telling his brother Lennie of their dream, owning a farm and how “ at the end of the month others would go and blow their money at the cathouse (brothel), but not us!” Because they need money to buy the farm. It does this when William, a poor, black, american, teenager, who has the dream of playing in the NBA is being interviewed about him getting a job when William says ”I gotta do this if I wanna play”. William knows that he has to earn money if he wants to pay for basketball gear and school fees if he wants to train and make it in the NBA. This quote tells us that William is working because of his dream, that he is motivated by his dream to work as working is necessary to achieve it. This text connects the the idea that dreams motivate people to improve themselves as it gives a clear example of how william is motivated by his dream to improve his financial standing and to work. James wanted us to understand that for people to achieve their dreams, that they will have to work hard to make it possible, as shown by William working all holidays when he could be …show more content…
Mrs Lovett is in love with Sweeney Todd, who is on a murder spree, and turns his victims into pies to sell to the people of london. When Mrs lovett is singing of her love for Todd she sings” I 'll go to the ends of the earth for you, I 'll do anything you want me to do”. This tells us that Lovett would do anything for todd and throughout the movie she hints at how she turned the bodies into pies to impress Todd. To sell the pies she knew that her shop will have to be refurbished and reopened which she did. So we can infer that Mrs Lovett was motivated by the dream of marrying Sweeney Todd to improve her pie shop and to sell the man pies. This tells us that mrs Lovett is motivated by her dream to improve her pie shop business. Burton wanted us to understand that people can be motivated to do terrible things to achieve their dreams with the example of how Mrs Lovett sold man pies to impress
“If you can dream it, you can do it,” is a quote that Walt Disney was known for saying. I simple means you can accomplish and reach every one of our dreams if you have the determination to pursue them. This is the main concept behind the essay of “The Dreamer.” By Junot Diaz. The essay/article. Was first written and appeared in More Magazine for women in 2011 (Diaz 128). It is the short story of Junot Diaz’s mother was determination to go to school and get an education despite the punishment she endured and the sacrifice required.
In the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Steinbeck illustrates the dreams of George,Lennie, and other characters and how these dreams are unrealistic and unattainable .Their dreams were the reason that these characters kept moving forward but because of difficult circumstances the dreams of George,Lennie,Candy and Curley's wife are shattered , they knew that their dream was never really attainable but they still had hope but because they were so greatly impacted by Lennies actions their dreams are never accomplished.
One of the biggest factors in achieving your dreams is the support system that you have behind you. There is only so much a person can control before it begins to wear you down, and you can’t endure anymore. In the beginning of the documentary Hoop Dreams, both boys had a strong dream of making it to the NBA, but slowly over time you begin to notice that dream of theirs start to fizzle and become out of reach. In this situation, Arthur and William both had the odds stacked against them even before they attempted to pursue their dream. The struggles financially, educationally, and pressure from family were too substantial to ignore, and eventually led to their failure.
Dreams and hope are all worth while but in the book it shows how hard it is to get your dreams. In the book Of Mice and Men the first scene is of them fleeing from their job. The job was contributing to the dream but since there was conflict they had to run otherwise there would be no dream. When they get to there new job a worker over hears their dream and wants to get in on it. “you know a place like that?” said candy. Said on page 29 on the ipad. So they agree and they're way closer to their dream then they ever thought they would be. “George spat on the floor disgustedly. “We got ten bucks between us.” Then he said thoughtfully, “look, if me an’ lennie work a month an’ don’t spen’ nothing, we’ll have a hundred bucks. That’d be four fifty. I bet we could swing her for that. Then you an’ lennie could go get her started an’ i’d get a job an’ make up the res’, an’ you could sell eggs an’ stuff like
Dreams give people motivation and a sense of hope to not give up when life's hard conditions get in the way of success. In the novella, Of Mice and Men, George Milton has his own “American Dream” where he will live in a house, that he bought with his hard earned money, with Lennie. They will grow their own crops and own farm animals to feed themselves. This dream keeps George motivated to find new jobs when Lennie gets them into trouble. George does not want to give up on working hard and making money on ranches.
In Of Mice and Men one of the main themes is the idea of the american dream. This is one of the more important themes in the book because it plays such a big role in how each character pursued life, and their dreams show a different side of who they are and what they want from life. Many of the characters talk about what their version of the american dream is. Curley’s wife talks about how she wanted to be a movie star. Candy and George both want to own their own land. Crooks dream is to work in lennie's garden. However it remains only a dream for them and they are awaken by the fact that they can't have the perfect american dream. Another way that this idea is used in the book and by characters is that Lennie and George keep faithful

An important theme in ‘Of Mice and Men’ is that of hope and dreams. The main dream is that of George and Lennie to own a smallholding and work self-sufficiently.
These topics both come together in Of Mice and Men to create a message. In my opinion the message in this novel is that it is normal and okay to share a dream with a friend of yours. It also implies that there will be bumps in the road while trying to achieve your initial goal. One more point that I assume John Steinbeck was trying to get across while writing of Mice and Men was that sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

John Steinbeck seems to suggest in his novella Of Mice and Men That progress can’t be made without strong focus on your dreams. This novella rings throughout the entire story and it doesn't just touch the main characters it spans throughout the entire story. So let's jump in and find out why I think that
In the novel Of Mice and Men Lennie, George, and Candy demonstrate and prove that dreams are only one of the things that can keep men going. “Lennie, for God sakes don’t drink so much….You gonna be sick like you was last night….I ain’t sure its good water. Looks kinda scummy.” (page 3). George is so concerned with Lennie that he tells him to be careful of what he drinks because he does not know if it is good or contaminated. He tells him that so Lennie will not get sick and so that they can save up for their dream house.
What is the role of dreams in John Steinbeck’s novella ‘Of Mice and Men’ In John Steinbeck’s novella, ‘Of Mice and Men,’ the role of dreams plays a very important part. The book was written during the ‘Great Depression,’ which occurred just after the well known ‘Wall Street Crash.’ The book Of Mice and Men was set in the depression of the 1930’s in California in a place called Soledad. Men travelled around looking for any work they could find, they had to leave families and their homes just to make money. Even firms and companies went bankrupt; these were depressing and desperate times, with no hope and definitely no future.
In the novels Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and the novel Out of the dust by Karen Hesse, dreams are viewed in different perspectives. John Stenbeck is telling you to strive for your goals and to work towards them because your dreams can get deferred and destroyed. When the opinion of Hansberry is implying that dreams can come true if you try hard, even if you're going through tough times. Karen Hesse is reiterating that you should not let anything interfere with accomplishing your goals.
In Of Mice and Men, it seems an incontrovertible law of nature that dreams should go unfulfilled. From George and Lennie’s ranch to Curley’s wife’s stardom, the characters’ most cherished aspirations repeatedly fail to materialize. However, the fact that they do dream—often long after the possibility of realizing those dreams has vanished—suggests that dreaming serves a purpose in their lives. What the characters ultimately fail to see is that, in Steinbeck’s harsh world, dreams are not only a source of happiness but a source of misery as well.
“All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” This quote from Walt Disney addressing the concept of achieving dreams is very accurate, and can be seen throughout literature today and in the past. Dreams can give people power or take away hope, and influence how people live their lives based upon whether they have the determination to attack their dreams or not; as seen through characters like the speaker in Harlem by Langston Hughes and Lena and Walter Younger in Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in The Sun.
Basketball is an indoor and outdoor game. Throughout the years Basketball has been making a reputation for itself in this world but today it is one of the most popular sports played throughout the world. Basketball is widely played throughout colleges, high schools, NBA (National Basketball Association), even for fun. Basketball is now diverse with many different kinds of players and teams. In the past it was mainly a male dominated sport.
