Throughout four different text there is a recurring idea that connects to how dreams motivate people to improve themselves. These four texts are, the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the film The Great Gatsby directed by Baz Luremann, the documentary Hoop Dreams by Steven James and the film Sweeney Todd directed by Tim Burton.

The novella Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, connects to the idea of dreams motivate people to improve themselves. It does this throughout the text when George is telling his brother Lennie of their dream, owning a farm and how “ at the end of the month others would go and blow their money at the cathouse (brothel), but not us!” Because they need money to buy the farm. It does this when William, a poor, black, american, teenager, who has the dream of playing in the NBA is being interviewed about him getting a job when William says ”I gotta do this if I wanna play”. William knows that he has to earn money if he wants to pay for basketball gear and school fees if he wants to train and make it in the NBA. This quote tells us that William is working because of his dream, that he is motivated by his dream to work as working is necessary to achieve it. This text connects the the idea that dreams motivate people to improve themselves as it gives a clear example of how william is motivated by his dream to improve his financial standing and to work. James wanted us to understand that for people to achieve their dreams, that they will have to work hard to make it possible, as shown by William working all holidays when he could be …show more content…

Mrs Lovett is in love with Sweeney Todd, who is on a murder spree, and turns his victims into pies to sell to the people of london. When Mrs lovett is singing of her love for Todd she sings” I 'll go to the ends of the earth for you, I 'll do anything you want me to do”. This tells us that Lovett would do anything for todd and throughout the movie she hints at how she turned the bodies into pies to impress Todd. To sell the pies she knew that her shop will have to be refurbished and reopened which she did. So we can infer that Mrs Lovett was motivated by the dream of marrying Sweeney Todd to improve her pie shop and to sell the man pies. This tells us that mrs Lovett is motivated by her dream to improve her pie shop business. Burton wanted us to understand that people can be motivated to do terrible things to achieve their dreams with the example of how Mrs Lovett sold man pies to impress
