For my interview I decided to focus on a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ASD as we learned is a disorder that is not curable. ASD impairs one’s ability to interact with others and to communicate with others. ASD is also known as a group of disorders that interfere with brain development. The mother I interview explained that she begin seeing “unusual” things going on with her son when he was an infant, but always thought the he would grow out of it. At the age of 2 years old she explained that he was diagnosed with Autism. Some signs and symptoms include the following; failing to respond to name, resist cuddling or holding, poor eye contact, delayed speech, inability to start a conversation, repeating words, speaking in abnormal tone, no emotions expressed, …show more content…

She said that the doctors did a test, but she did not know what it was called to diagnose Autism. Based on what we learned in class the doctors probably diagnosed using the DSM criteria. As mentioned before no cure exists for this specific condition however there a many things that can be done to improve the child behaviors. One can request speech, family or education therapies. One can also receive medications to help with some of the symptoms that one experiences; however there is no medication that can actually improve Autism (Autism spectrum disorder. (n.d.) As my interview continued the mother stated that she has four other children not including her son who has autism. Her son who was diagnosed with autism is the youngest, but her other kids aren’t fair apart in years. The mother explained that most days her other kids understand that they need to be patient with their brother, but she explained that kids are kids and sometimes they argue. She explained that it’s hard to keep up with all of her kids and that her husband is a truck driver so he is not home that often. She explained that her other kids will sometimes joke around with her son who has autism, but try not to push him to the
