Despite his temporal and cultural distance from our own context, many aspects of Augustine’s thought on economic matters can challenge, critique and inspire Christian ethicists today. I have shown that belief in the danger of wealth is ancient in the Christian tradition, and was once so strongly held that Augustine took a moderate position in teaching that some wealthy people might still hope to achieve salvation. Augustine draws his conviction of wealth’s danger directly from Jesus’ words in the
Gospel (Sermon 60; Sermon 11 On the Beatitudes), and it has been widely preached throughout Christian history, by St. Francis of Assisi (1181–
1226) among others. Yet the message of a possible moral danger to wealth is rarely heard in faith communities
