Music and the Brain The way music works with the brain has many different ways that people can benefit from. Although most people think that music is just for listening, it has lots of advantages. It can heal people. Take Gabrielle Giffords. In 2011, Gabrielle Giffords, an Arizonian politician, was shot. When she woke up from her coma, she wasn’t able to talk, but could sing. Music therapists used melody to rewire her brain’s language center from the left hemisphere to the right. Music can help you. Auditory skills, neural skills, perceptual skills, and cognitive skills all get enhanced. These are a couple of things that music can do. It can also bring back memories by listening to familiar, old, and preferred music. Patients with Alzheimer's memories will go away, but the memories for music remain intact. Even the most demented patient won’t recognize his/her parents, but will remember his/her favorite song. The reason why is because there’s a lot of emotional content in music. It can overcome brain damage. Music can help treat diseases like Alzheimer’s, autism, post-traumatic stress disorder, dementia, stroke and lots of more diseases. It can help growing kids remember facts by using songs. It will also change the brain’s plasticity. OPERA is a way to change the brain’s plasticity. O stands for overlap. P is precise. E is emotion. R is repetition and A represents attention. If you play guitar chords to a 2nd grade classroom and then ask them to draw visual symbols for what they hear, a line for high notes and a circle for low notes. This can actually indicate their 5th grade literacy rate. Language and music can change the human brain drastically. Music can restore speech and help with language processing. Auditory language training and music can alter the anatomy of the brain that associates with language and speech
