Gun Control The topic of gun control has always been a touchy issue. The people for gun control will argue that taking away guns will decrease crime and homicide. The people against gun control will argue that guns are used for protection. Although the topic is very controversial, knowing the facts is important before you pick a side. The first gun control law was in 1837, in Georgia where they banned handguns. That law was removed eight years later, however, because of the 2nd amendment (Goforth). The first federal law was in 1934, when Franklin D. Roosevelt made the “New Deal for Crime.” The National Firearms Act of 1934, levies $200 tax on the manufacturing and sale of machine guns and sawed off shotguns ("Washington Post"). In the 1990’s to the 2000’s, firearm related homicide decreased about 50% after gun control laws (“What Are The Gun Control Effects on Crime and Murder”). It’s been shown though that harsh gun control has a negative effect on crime rate. In washington D.C., 1976, an extreme gun control law was pushed and the murder rate rose 134%. Another example is in New York, in the 1970’s nineteen of killings involved pistols, but after the the gun control law was made it rose to fifty percent (“What Are The Gun Control Effects on Crime and Murder”). States with few gun restrictions like New Hampshire and Vermont tend to have low crime and murder rates with Vermont being forty-ninth in crime and forty-seventh in murder (“What Are The Gun Control Effects on Crime and Murder”). Also, states with concealed carry laws have had murder rates drop about eight percent, rape drop five percent, assault drop seven percent, and robbery drop three percent (“What Are The Gun Control Effects on Crime and Murder”). Justin King from MintPress News states that gun control can have very little impact on the murder rate. In Australia, guns were banned in 1996. The murder rate rose a little but returned to the rate it was originally quickly (King). Nearly the same thing happened in Ireland in 1972. A ban on guns made the murder rate, rise but it dropped back down eventually
