What really is an outsider? An outsider is someone who just doesn’t belong or doesn’t fit into a specific group of people. They normally don’t have many friends and are mostly alone and quiet. So are outsiders misjudged or misunderstood? Outsiders are misunderstood because since they are quiet, many people don’t know what they are thinking about or what their interests are. Outsiders are misunderstood because people don’t know what their beliefs are since they are normally so kept to themselves. For example, in “Metamorphosis”, Gregor Samsa doesn’t like his job, but his family doesn’t know that. “If I didn’t hold back for my parents’ sake, I would’ve quit ages ago”(Kafka 5).
