What really is an outsider? An outsider is someone who just doesn’t belong or doesn’t fit into a specific group of people. They normally don’t have many friends and are mostly alone and quiet. So are outsiders misjudged or misunderstood? Outsiders are misunderstood because since they are quiet, many people don’t know what they are thinking about or what their interests are. Outsiders are misunderstood because people don’t know what their beliefs are since they are normally so kept to themselves. For example, in “Metamorphosis”, Gregor Samsa doesn’t like his job, but his family doesn’t know that. “If I didn’t hold back for my parents’ sake, I would’ve quit ages ago”(Kafka 5). Stereotyping is a constant theme throughout The Outsiders. It may seem as if the Greasers are the ones that really have to deal with presumptions, but the Socs also have quite a bit of stereotyping to deal with. While the outside world tries to force these stereotypes onto the gangs, they also tend to assume things about each other. This leads to divisions between them that most likely would not exist if stereotyping was not so abundant. The Greasers are pegged as nasty hoodlum troublemakers that are dropouts and criminals. On the other hand, the Socs are made out to be the opposite- crisp, intelligent young adults that have no real problems. Many cases of stereotyping between the two groups leads to violence between them.
According to Chris Pine, “The only thing you sometimes have control over is perspective. You don’t have control over your situation. But you have a choice about how you view it.” This quote means you can choose how you view people and things.This relates to the Outsiders because the novel is about how you choose to view people. The Outsiders is about how people shouldn’t judge others based on stereotypes and they should get to know them first.
Outlier. An outlier is someone who is not considered to be a normal person within society. They have qualities that most people do not obtain. They are the most successful of individuals and many aspire to be them. Michael Jackson is the epitome of what I believe is a true outlier. In his best-selling novel, Malcolm Gladwell stated that we tend to spend more time looking at individuals success rather than looking at things that ultimately contributed to that success, such as their family, birthplace, and even birth date.
This novel by S.E Hinton , “The Outsiders” shows a crucial point that everybody is special is some way and be known as who they are not as a group. The important message of the story is that individuals should not take people for granted. Instead, treasure those close to you and understand them.

I feel as though the novel The outsiders has many themes, but the most important one is belonging. The greasers are a group of poor, low class youth that don’t have much and live on the wrong side of town. They are always held accountable for their actions. On the other hand, the Socs are a bunch of high class youth that are very privileged and aren’t held accountable for their immature actions.
To begin with, when I was younger I would have considered myself an outsider because when I first started school, I didn’t have the characteristics to fit in and felt like I would not blend into the people I was surrounded by. Also, I have met many people who have presented experiences from their past when they had felt like they didn’t fit in because they couldn’t keep up the standards to be popular. In social media, there are many guidelines that people feel the need to meet in order to feel like you belong and some who don’t match up can feel like outsiders, and that happens to many. Furthermore, in today’s society people feel the need to be popular or to fit in, and if they can’t meet the expectations they are considered an outsider and that happens universally. Others may suggest that just because someone doesn’t fit in a group doesn’t mean they are considered an outsider, they are just someone who doesn’t meet certain expectations. However, many others would disagree and would label someone an outsider when they don’t fit in or don’t meet expectations of society because that makes them think they don’t
Being an outsider can have many negative effects on a person, such as hindering a person’s level of participation and their ability to function in a community. The harmful labels and prejudices against a person, group, or race can keep a person from having the same opportunities as those around them, effectively preventing their participation. Unfortunately, there are many examples of this in the book The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore and the Spiegel online article, “Europe’s Unwanted People.”
In Meagan Spooner’s Hunted, the quote listed above helps validate the theme of being an outsider. The narrator, Beast, describes his longing to find something that could satisfy his lonely needs. He and Yeva are the only humans who are capable of understanding the magic of the forest and the world around them. The two outsiders embrace the music and magic discarded by others as children finding pleasure from it. They also do not conform to their social groups. Yeva enjoys strolling and hunting and avoiding spending time with her family. In addition, she is able to see through hate and resentment, while other humans blindly quarrel amongst each other during conflicts. Similarly, the quote establishes the setting of the story. The Beast and Yeva live in a fantasy world filled with magic and creatures.
