1. Reflections arising from this poem. The poem is like a response for everyone saying, “I’m just a nurse” without the realization of how that sentence humiliates the nursing in general. Susanne repeated this sentence in the sake of making that people discover the difference a nurse could make. A nurse is a professor who teach students to be nurses, a teacher who teach patients and their families about health, a researcher who helps nurses learn effective ways of health caring, a nurse is more than a word to say. When I first choose a nurse as my academic major, my parents were disappointed because they never know how great is nursing. Anyone who has any doubt of what a nurse can do should read “I’m just a nurse” poem, which summarized the major benefits of nurses and nursing as a whole. As I felt impressed with the variety of things a nurse could involve in and assist the health care, everyone’s believes would change to the better after reading it. Moreover, I believe that nursing is getting known more and more and with time, there will be no one thinks about nursing in a negative way. The majority of our society holds the notion that nurses are no more than trained professionals, working for a doctor, who simply provide medical care for the sick and informed. However, what nursing means to me goes deeper than that belief. Nursing is a profession in which individuals are responsible for not only the care of the sick and infirmed but are also responsible for being a support system and an educator, as well as an advocate for the promotion of optimal care. In today’s society, nurses are an important part of any medical facility’s investment. We look to nurses with a sense of admiration and reverence, and look to them for security in times of need. What makes nursing such a desirable and enthralling field to other people? Despite the fact that doctors are normally under the spotlight, nursing is of profound importance in American culture. Nurses provide comfort and security, as well as a knowledge of medical aid. The field of nursing has the benefit of coming from a field that is ancient, yet timeless and has blossomed throughout history to make a large impact on our culture today.
Nurses provide an invaluable contribution to healthcare. ***Shields et al (2011) state that there is ‘good evidence that a highly educated nursing workforce reduces patient and hospital mortality’ (p 314). As a result, nurses more than ever need to have a clear sense of their professional identity.
Throughout this philosophy paper, I have explored what nursing is based on my personal values and beliefs as it relates to the body of work in nursing. I value the importance of holistic nursing and the care of patients being individualized for them and their family. Also, effectively collaborating among health care professionals to ensure quality care for patients. Additionally, the importance of health promotion as one of the main roles of nurses is being a teacher, since promoting health prevents illness and increases the level of health in clients. These principles will serve as a guide for my personal standards of nursing practice.
Worldwide, nurses have developed themselves into professionals with a great deal of knowledge. Despite these developments towards professionalism, nurses are still portrayed in a misleading and inaccurate way and are not given the recognition for the skills they have acquired. The essence of nursing is not always clear and nurses still suffer from stereotypes (Hoeve,2014). A stereotype can be defined as “a cognitive representation or impression of a social group that people form by associating particular characteristics and emotions with a group” (Smith and Mackie, 2007). Of the many types of nursing, a very popular stereotype that is depicted of nurses is being doctor’s handmaiden and only performing repetitive and simple tasks (Hoeve,2014.) This public image of nursing does not match their professional images, in fact, it is quite the opposite. Nurses are strong independent individuals that play just as big a role in the hospital as due the doctors or surgeons. Service is the core of the nursing profession, and the essential evolution of the vocation reflects the ever-changing needs of the diverse patient population that it serves. This is why I believe nursing is the heart of healthcare. I feel that being a nurse is one of the most demanding professions in the world that involves dedication and commitment as well as the most rewarding job. Nursing will always be my passion and excited to impart this knowledge to others. However, the the outside world doesn’t always acknowledge the skill and knowledge nurses have obtained through education and experience. In order to bring a better image to the public, nurses have to be more engaging to show what their work actually entails. Places where medical surgery, examines, etc. take place often get a bad reputation especially hospitals and nursing homes when it comes to nurses. The public views the nursing world as neglectful and uncaring. It is the job of the nurse to care for the patient but in some instances you find some trained unprofessional nurses who change the public's opinion on such matters.
I have noted that many nurses tend to restrict themselves to the traditional conception of ‘just a nurse’ and this is likely to hold one back in career.
Nurses play a huge role in the health care system. A nurse is a bridge between doctor and patient. s/he is a compassionate, understanding and nonjudgmental yet firm and grounded. S/he is probably one of the most important yet least appreciated person in a patient’s life. When many think of a nurse they probably recognize them by a white hat and uniform. Today those white uniforms have been replaced with vividly colored scrubs worn by both male and female nurses, and many other employees in healthcare. Nurses are not just the people that are limited to bedside care and drug administration; they are highly skilled and well-educated nursing professionals.
Nursing is a medical profession that involves the care and management of patients majorly in the hospital setting. This paper seeks to illustrate the fact that nursing is both a science and an art.
