YouTube and Vimeo contain .com domains, which classify them as commercial entities. Although most of the content from both sites can be accessed for free, they each have unique business models to generate revenue for its company, users, and partners. For example Vimeo and YouTube generate revenue through techniques such as memberships, video views, advertising, etc. Specified websites for commerce will usually be registered under a .com domain.
Author
Commercial websites such as YouTube and Vimeo often don’t list a specific author because of its ownership. Three founders initially conceived YouTube. Since its inception, the original founders have sold the website to Google Corporation. The main site of YouTube chooses not to state an author could be due to a number of people responsible for YouTube. Further more, giant corporation invests in it and whose stockholders own a portion of the company. On a side note, technically anyone who holds stock in Google shares ownership to YouTube. Similar to YouTube, Vimeo was initially started by original founders and later acquired by a publicly traded corporation. However, Vimeo takes an interesting approach in expressing who the authors are by introducing people whom are behind the scenes. If you poke around the site, you will find a page that explains what the company is about and the people responsible for running the site through written explanations with images, allowing users to identify Vimeo as a family in contrast to a large corporation. Meanwhile, YouTube chooses to write and display videos of what YouTube is about, leaving out specific people as authors. As the two are intentionally video-sharing websites, they both use video content to generate images. When an author uploads a video, he or she chooses a thumbnail picture to represent a video. The video thumbnail is then presented on the center of the page. Its center position extinguishes it from sidebars. This can be seen with YouTube, Vimeo, and other video-sharing websites. The thumbnail pictures often foreshadow a video’s content. Essentially, what can be chosen to be displayed is author generated, not website generated.
Contrast
Both websites utilize a white background and black text although Vimeo is dynamic in alternating black to white contrast. The clarity both websites produce allows it to be very easy to differentiate and navigate information.
