George Washington’s Victory at Yorktown
George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 in Virginia. He received his primary education at a nearby churchyard school, and then was sent to boarding school. In his early teens his education came to an end. When he was 16 he got his first job surveying the lands of Shenandoah Valley. He was able to earn money to buy his own land. By the age of 21, he owned more than 1500 acres of land. In 1752 Washington’s older brother Lawrence died, passing down his Mount Vernon estate to George. In 1754, he served as a colonist in the French and Indian War. In 1775, Washington became military advisor for New York. By 1781, Washington forced Cornwallis to surrender at Yorktown. The war was won (Toward Fact: A Biography). George Washington’s s struggles and accomplishes gave him the military power to defeat Cornwallis at Yorktown by forcing him to surrender, blocking Cornwallis’ escape from Yorktown by land and having a strong army.
The Battle of Yorktown took place from September 28th until October 19th 1781 in Yorktown, Virginia. It was the last major battle toward in the American Revolution. The Americans and French fought against the British. General Washington commanded the Americans; Rochambeau commanded the French and Cornwallis commanded the British. There was about 8,800 Americans fighting, 7,800 French fighting and 6,000 British fighting. Both sides were armed with guns and ready to fight (The British Surrender at Yorktown, 1781).

...y and agreed their situation was hopeless. On the morning of October 17th, a drummer appeared followed by an officer waving a white handkerchief. To make sure nothing went wrong between the French and the Americans, Washington ordered that the French be given an equal share in every step of the surrender process. The articles of capitulation were signed on October, 19th, 1781. Cornwallis refused to meet Washington and refused to come to the ceremony of surrender. Instead General O’Hara presented the sword of surrender to the Americans and the French. The British soldiers marched out and laid down their arms between the French and American armies (Siege of Yorktown).
In conclusion General Washington had a strong army and was happy he got victory. I think he is a good man and deserved victory. He is a good leader and commander and knows how to form a good army.

He took over outside of Boston, before this his experience was limited to wilderness travel and soldiering. His soldiering experiences were mainly for his home state of Virginia. The first battle that was of significance in this book was the Battle of Long Island. At this battle, Washington and the rebel army are soundly defeated by General Sir William Howe and the British army. After this battle was fought, Howe did not follow-up the victory with quick action as the Americans retreated.
Washington's selection to be the leader of the Continental Army was the wisest choice that the newly formed Continental Congress could have made. Washington's selection as Commander of the Continental Army did more to win the Revolutionary war than any other decision made during the conflict. His personal character epitomizes perfectly the five traits required in a successful general: wisdom, sincerity, humanity, courage, and strictness. Actually, it was separated into small battles, one of those battles is the battle of Trenton 1776 which is actually the battle I will be informing you about. This battle has some causes, leaders, events, and some effects. First of all, the battle didn’t happen for no reason, actually there were 2 causes. Hobart.k12.in.us stated that Washington, a leader I will be explaining later in the passage, and his continental army felt like they were in trouble and they really needed to win a battle to keep their game up. So on Christmas night when they were camped by Delaware,when Washington had an outrageous plan that would give him and his army victory.
George Washington was selected Commander in Chief of the Continental Army because of his courage and bravery, his ability to motivate and command respect from his followers, and his strategic ability in battle. His reputation as a daring and successful leader inspired confidence and loyalty in his followers. If it weren't for George Washington, it would be a different America today. Washington's military experience started when he was selected by Governor Dinwiddie, of Virginia, to travel to the Ohio Valley to tell the French to leave. He was only twenty-two years old, inexperienced, and naive.
On June, 17th 1775 began a fight between the British and the Americans, it took place on Breed’s HIll. In Charlestown Peninsula, North side of Boston Harbor, this battle was the bloodest of the Revoltionary in America. The British Commander, Lieutenant General Thomas Gage, Major General William Howe. There were about 2,400 troops being lead by Major general Howe.

The plans for Yorktown actually started up in May of 1781 when General Washington joined up with French General Rochambeau. The American forces at this time were stationed in the area of New York City closely watching British General Clinton’s forces. Washington knew that General Cornwallis who had been dominating in the south would soon be moving northward to rendezvous with Clinton’s and General Nathaniel Green’s forces. He also knew that if this happened it would be near impossible of defeating the British. As Cornwallis continued his northern track he ran into trouble at the Battle of Cowpens. In fact he lost much of his light infantry and cavalry in the Carolinas. He did score a victory at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, but this would prove to not help him much as he took severe losses and consumed a lot of time.
During the time of November 16, 1776 the battle of Fort Washington took place over the Hudson River. This battle was a big conflict of the military as well with the kingdom of Great Britain and thirteen other colonies of North America during the American Revolutionary War of (1775-1783). The defeat of the British at the Battle of Yorktown by the patriots and the French signified the end of the war. French ships and patriots trapped Cornwallis and his troops. Cornwallis surrendered and the British were defeated. Then the Treaty of Paris was drawn up because of the defeat of the British.
The Boston Massacre is considered by many historians to be the first battle of the Revolutionary War. The fatal incident happened on March 5 of 1770. The massacre resulted in the death of five colonists. British troops in the Massachusetts Bay Colony were there to stop demonstrations against the Townshend Acts and keep order, but instead they provoked outrage. Washington’s strategy was pushing British soldiers back into the city of Philadelphia in order to attack a main base. This was too baffling for Washington’s inexperianced soldiers, and the foggy mist didn’t really help that. George Washington led a central battle that forced British soldiers back through town. This base was a stone house and Britain defended it greatly. Americans tried using cannons to break through the stone walls, but they were too thick for Americans to bypass. The Revolutionary War started in 1775. The American colonies have had enough of the British occupants and set their foot down in pursuit to freedom and independence. Each battle that happened during the Revolutionary War had its own significance and contributions to the independence of the colonies. Many brave men laid their lives in pursuit of the dream of independence from British control. One particular battle paved the way for that independence to become a reality. That battle is known as the Battle of Yorktown. The Battle of Yorktown took place in what we know today as Virginia. It was a decisive battle that turned the table during the Revolutionary War. The battle ultimately led to the liberty of the American Colonies from the British. The strategy and scheme of maneuver from the American and French soldiers on the lands of Virginia were risky yet impressive. General George Washington and his French counterpart Lieutenant General de Rochambeau were able to take an offensive to General Cornwallis in Virginia. Those actions gave General Washington the advantage to turn the tide of the war.
