An unknown author writes, “A parent will only ever be in 1 of 3 places: In front of you to cheer you on, behind you to have your back, or next to you so you aren’t walking alone” This quote is put to use when read the book Because I’m Your Dad. Author Ahmet Zappa does an exceptional job when creating a relationship with the father and son. Although the father and son have a nice relationship, there is no mother figure in the writing. Zappa shows and explains all the fun things the father and son did, but never brought a mother into the picture. In addition, the father’s roles are justified with them all be stereotypical. To repeat, the mother is not present, therefore the consequence is the father having to do all the parenting. To address the problem of gender bias, the book writes, “Because I’m your dad, you can have spaghetti for breakfast, French toast for dinner” (Zappa 5/6). Generally, in today’s society, the mother makes and serves the food, but the father is left to do it. In addition to the father doing everything, the father goes to all the child’s sporting events. Males are generally associated with sports and watching sports. Once again, the mother was not in attendance at the sporting events. Not only does Zappa have gender bias between the parents, he displays it through the child also. Zappa writes, “Because I’m your dad, you’ll grow up knowing robots are cool, but monsters are even cooler” (7). This goes to show that male children are depicted to have big and masculine toys rather than playing with toys that are more feminine. All of the actions done by the father can be done as a mother also. The parents could even do the actions together. Therefore, since the father does it all, the writing is gender bias. In contrast, some may think that the book is acceptable and there is nothing wrong with this particular lifestyle. In all of the pictures presented, the father and son have a smile on their faces (Because I’m Your Dad). For an example, the father is bathing the son, they are both laughing and it is presented that they are having fun. (Zappa 6). If the father and son are having a good life why change the atmosphere.
