Against a War Against Iraq
Nowadays, what I hear from the radio and television programs in the US is about a war against Iraq. A main topic of what American people talk about is how it is going to be. What I thought after talking to young people about it was that they really do not want this terrible fighting. Through my philosophy and anthropology teachers, I knew the background of this war. They said that the US gave weapons of mass distraction including nuclear weapons to Iraq during the Iran-Iraq War. Although the US and Iraq had had a good relationship, Iraq might give those weapons of mass distraction secretly to some terrorist groups, which possibly attacked the U.S. That was why the US requested Saddam Hussein who is the current president of Iraq to resign his possession. However, he did not quit so that the US and Iraq started this war. Through some Japanese Internet news programs and any other countries’ news on the Internet, I realized that this war is not only a matter between the US and Iraq because of possible damage by nuclear weapons and other possible damage, which many countries all over the world may have because of this war. Therefore this war should be finished as soon as possible.
First, this war badly affects Iraqi people’s states of mind because people are worried about the U.S attacking them. They are living in a state of fear thinking they could be dead tomorrow. Although they are Iraqi people who are said to be bad people by American people, they do not have any role in the politics of their country directly. ... war does not benefit anyone except the U.S. It is obvious that the US wants to get Iraq’s resources and bring peace into its country. However, to do so, the US has to provide many negative affects to the rest of the world. Actually, Saddam Hussein is bad guy who causes many problems. However, there is no reason that many people have to die for him. I hope we can avoid this possible war for world peace.

Beginning on June 4th 1942, the Battle of Midway took place six months after the United States became involved in World War two due to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. After the French collapse in World War two, Japan seized the undefended territory of Indochina and also began moving into China. In response to these harsh moves, the United States and England placed oil embargos on Japan. Relying heavily upon imported oil, the embargos would ultimately cause Japanese industry to stop production. Japan’s response to these unwanted sanctions were moves to overtake various Pacific islands which could provide the mother country with oil. The Japanese knew that the American response to these actions would be war, so it initiated the impending war with an attack on Pearl Harbor in order to cripple the American fleet. As Japan gained ground in the Pacific early in the war, the Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto decided that the only way to win the war was to destroy the American aircraft carrier fleet. The Battle of Midway began because of the Japanese. Japan wanted to gain more land in the 1930s. The Japanese needed to overpower lands and countries close to Japan to do this. But to overpower these countries, natural resources became a necessity to the Japanese. Japan needed a strong military to gain the natural resource, and they did not want the United States knowing or intruding in on their plan. Because of this, the Japanese believed that they needed to put an end to the U.S. Navy. Japan then bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 (White 4). This attack did a large amount of damage, but the Japanese did not succeed in what they wanted to do, they wanted to destroy the American aricraft carriers. These aircraft carriers were not being stored in Pearl Harbor at that time. Just days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Japan invaded two more significant stations in the Pacific Ocean. On December 7th 1941, Japanese Planes and submarines attacked the United States Naval base at Pearl Harbor. This event singlehandedly brought the U.S from its then neutral stance in World War Two to a fighting member of the “Allied Powers.” Pearl Harbor was the first of a long series of confrontations between the U.S and the Japanese in an effort to gain control of the Pacific. Unlike the “War in Europe” the Pacific strategy was dominated by naval and aerial battles, with the occasional land-based “Island Hopping” Campaign. As such, one of the most important factors in the war in the pacific was Fleet Size, the more ships a country could send to war, the better. Pearl Harbor was the Japanese’s way of trying to deal with the massive U.S Pacific fleet. However, Pearl Harbor was not the turning point of the war. After December 7th the United States began work on numerous technological developments which would ultimately help them in one of the most important battles of WWII, the largest naval confrontation of the war, The Battle of Midway. The battle, which took place from June 4th to June 7th , 1942 is widely considered the turning point of the Pacific Theater (James & Wells). Through the Post-Pearl Harbor desire for “Revenge” and various technological advantages including code breaking and radar, the U.S were able to outsmart the Japanese at Midway and ultimately win the battle, eventually leading to a victory in the Pacific.
The book begins right in the midst of the clean up effort in Pearl Harbor; Admiral Chester Nimitz was sent immediately after the bombs fell to take command of the Pacific Fleet. Admiral Nimitz would obtain control of the Pacific fleet for the entirety of the novel. He contributed many key decisions that would lead to an American victory. On the opposing side Admiral Yamamoto Isoroku would lead his feared task force against the American fleet. A large advantage dealing with the way the tasks forces operated is revealed early in the book and would prove vital in the battle. Unbeknownst to Admiral Yamamoto, US code breakers had deciphered the Japanese radio transmissions and the Americans knew exactly what he was doing. With this knowledge, Admiral Nimitz, commander of the US Naval forces in the Pacific, decided to send a contingent of 21 ships to Alaska and retained the rest of his fleet in the defense of Midway. The Japanese fleet was able to elude the Americans and attack the base at Dutch Harbor on the 3rd and 4th of June. Afterwards they were able to evade a naval confrontation again, and landed on the islands of Kiska and Attu on the 7th of June, quickly subduing the military and civilian inhabitants.
Last and biggest of the Pacific island battles of World War II, the Okinawa campaign (April 1—June 22, 1945) involved the 287,000 troops of the U.S. Tenth Army against 130,000 soldiers of the Japanese Thirty-second Army. At stake were air bases vital to the projected invasion of Japan ("Battle of Okinawa," 1996). The Battle of Okinawa remembered more for its iconic photograph of US Marines raising the US flag on Okinawa more so than any other war or battle ever fought. Okinawa the largest of the Ryukus islands played a major role in the American forces overall strategic efforts to advance to the mainland’s of Japan. Because it was the last major battle of WWII, the battle of Okinawa used lessons learned and TTP’s from all previous battles with the Japanese to successfully employ combined striking power of the services and techniques of amphibious operations.

On September 11, 2001, our country was hit with enormous devastation, just after eight o’clock a.m. the first of the twin towers was struck by a suicide pilot, the second was struck slightly later. The towers fell just after ten o’clock a.m., devastating the entire country, and ruining the lives of many. A plane also hit the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and another in rural Pennsylvania causing just as much grief. The U.S. is still in mourning, but standing tall, more Americans showed their American pride in the following months than ever before. In the morning hours of December 7, 1941 the Japanese attacked the Hawaiian islands at Pearl Harbor. The Japanese had been feeling the pressures of World War II (WWII) as did many others. With the resources of the Japanese dwindling, the Japanese decided to attack the U.S. while simultaneously planning the attack during the negotiations of continued peace between our two countries. The Japanese were able to cover up there planning for nearly a year. Planning for the attack and ultimately war in the pacific, started in January of 1941, and was finalized during the war games in November of 1941. The U.S. on the other hand would become a reactive force after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The inability to crack the Japanese code lead, to a lack of intelligence during this time making the plan of attack for the Japanese a successful one. It would seem that the year of planning and the strategies laid out in the “Combined Fleet Operations Top Secret Order 1” of the Japanese navy would become a reality in the pacific, allowing for an easy sweep of the military targets for the Japanese fleet.
In May of 1942, Japanese Admiral Isorosku Yamamoto devised a plan to draw the US Pacific fleet into battle where he could completely destroy it. To accomplish this master plan of his, he sought out the invasion of Midway Island which would provide a base for the Japan troops to attack Hawaii. Unfortunately for Yamamoto, America decrypted Japanese radio transmissions and Admiral Chester Nimitz was able to establish a counter attack against this offensive. Nimitz sent three aircraft carriers, The USS Enterprise, The USS Hornet and The USS Yorktown to destroy the Japanese. This is just a short overview of The Battle of Midway, or as commonly referred to as, the battle that changed the war. People argue that it had no affect on the war, but those critics couldn’t be farther from the truth. The Battle of Midway was the turning point of the war because it fully enters America into the war, it kicked off the Pacific Campaign, and it had Japan on the defensive, thus preventing them from helping The Axis Forces.
