This week’s reflection paper focuses on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) and its impact on Social Work. This analysis includes personal experiences, and emphasize on two populations: individuals struggling with addictions and geriatrics. The implementation of ACA has solidified that health care in the United States is undergoing a dramatic. Agreeing with our reading, the Implication of the Affordable Care Act on MCH Populations and Public Health Service, ACA has the potential to improve the health of families, children, youth, and women. In addition, ACA demonstrates a few Americans believe that health care is a human right a should be guaranteed to all Americans regardless of wealth or income. ACA prizes the health and wellness of individuals over corporate profits. Additionally, ACA supports future legislation to curb drug costs and sets a strong foundation for universal health care policy. Furthermore, with the ACA’s increased emphasis on preventive care and community-based treatment, social workers have an opportunity link the gap between physical and mental health, especially with the geriatric population. I have read so many articles that accentuate the need for geriatric social workers and working as a part-time social worker has solidified this perspective. Seniors can benefit from reductions in cost sharing for prescription drugs and for preventive services, however, many seniors do not understand ACA, insurance or the health care system. The ACA, in many ways, provides possibilities for social workers to be advocates or care managers for our senior population. Social workers must accept such avenues that ACA have created and work to help older adults and their families maintain well-being, overcome problems and achieve maximum
