Thus demonstrating that Patrick’s difficult relationship with his father started since he was child. Patrick’s hostile relationship with his father is depicted when Patrick’s father blames him for losing the bet he made and tells Patrick that he is a worthless person. Although research does not support the cognitive and behavioral model for bipolar I disorder it can still be used to describe the development of this mental disorder. For example, maladaptive behaviors are learned through modeling, classical conditioning, and operant conditioning through the behavioral model. In some cases these medications can be used in combination with each other and are effective in treating manic episodes. Although the reasons as to why mood stabilizing drugs seem to work in treating bipolar disorder are still unknown it is used as the first line of treatment by a variety of clinicians to treat this type of mental illness. In addition, I would recommend Patrick to undergo in adjunctive psychotherapy which includes psychoeducation which will allow Patrick and his family understand his mental illness and encourage them in dealing with this illness in an effective manner. Adjunctive psychotherapy will also allow Patrick to understand the reasons as to why he has to take and continue taking his medication while also setting Patrick in a routine to take his medication. Moreover, this type of therapy will allow Patrick to solve any family, social, school or even occupational problems that he may encounter in present or near future. Thus my recommendation for Patrick’s treatment includes prescribing him mood stabilizing drugs by first starting out with Lithium while also allowing him to undergo adjunctive psychotherapy. In the movie Patrick did receive treatment but stopped in taking his medication and only continuing his adjunctive psychotherapy. Patrick was hospitalized and was given Lithium, Seroquel, Abilify, Klonopin, and Trazadone. While he was hospitalized he also was given adjunctive psychotherapy and were getting him on a routine to take his medication although he stopped taking them and faked that he was taking his medication by simplplacing the pills under his tongue. The treatment that he was given in the movie to some extent does coincide to the recommended treatment that I stated but it differs in giving Abilify, Seroquel, Klonopin, and Trazadone as medication.
