After the 1970’s the world experienced a turning point in history, it was the spread of an integration of cultures around the globe; known as globalization. Along with globalization, a new globalized world economy came into existence. This was especially true after the fall of the second bloc. Globalization along with a global economy led to many improvements around the globe including better education, greater importance on health, longer life expectancy, and greater awareness for the care for the environment in agricultural and industrial practices. One of which is the diffusion of globalizing entertainment. For example, communications technologies such as the TV helped spread American comedies and dramas worldwide, making them part of global culture over time; as more and more people everywhere in the world began having access and watching these films. The same was true for other forms of entertainment around the world that spread through television, most notably it was soccer. By the 1980’s soccer had become the world's sport as it was spread via television and people from all around the world excitedly watched the world cup. Therefore, it could be said that communication technologies such as the television spread entertainment and sports that became part of a global culture. Moreover, communication technologies have changed how one is informed of what's going on around the world. This is because with technologies such as the internet and TV, the global culture of reading the newspaper has decreased, and has been interchanged with the culture of seeing the news through TV or online. This influences globalization, as most people around the world share this way of being informed more than ever before. Additionally, communication technologies such as the internet influenced the spread of globalizing music. This was especially true after the invention of the iphone in 2007 as it was widespread throughout the world, also due to communications technologies which allowed Apple to function globally, giving the people easy access to the same styles of music anywhere in the world. As Americans we have to start to comprehend that the world around us is changing technologically, politically, and economically. In “The Last Superpower” an excerpt from the book The Post American World by Fareed Zakaria published in 2008. Zakaria emphasizes on these changes. Thomas Friedman the author of “The World is Flat” a piece from the book The World is Flat: A brief history of the twenty-first century published in 2005 also emphasizes on the same changes currently happening in the world. Zakaria and Friedman define these changes as globalization. The obvious common ground shared by both authors is their representation of globalization and the effects that it has and will continue to have on modern life. In contrast to sharing the same main topic both authors take a drastically different approach on how the relay their information to the audience. The differences displayed are mainly due to their personal and educational backgrounds, definitions of globalization as well as the individual writing styles of each author.

In this paper I will be discussing how globalisation has impacted the Music Industry in recent years, and in particular the multi-national giant Universal Music Group (UMG). Globalisation is a noun that is hard to define; it has many definitions depending on which scholar you talk to, which dictionary you reference, and the viewpoint you take. The Oxford dictionary will tell you that globalisation is “the process by which businesses or other organisations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale” (Definition of globalization in English). People’s perspectives on defining the word vary depending on the place they were born, where they have lived, the religion they follow, their social status, political ideology, cultural background and wealth, amongst other things, because all of these will affect whether they view globalisation to be a positive or negative occurrence. My favourite definition comes from Kenichi Ochmae; a Japanese organisational theorist most recognised for introducing Japanese management methods, such as the just-in-time method of production, to the Western world.
