The world in which the human race lives in relies heavily on factory farming to provide food to over seven billion people. This method of food production is deemed normal and efficient in today’s society, yet has minute advantages. If we took the time to learn the conditions and technicalities of how factory farming actually operates, we would discover that the overall effects to the environment and human health are detrimental. Realistically, people are not going to stop consuming animal products, so instead, people should be conscious of how their food is being produced so that they may be informed in order to make changes in their dietary habits to better their own well being, as well as that of the environment’s. If people are conscious about their health and what they put inside their bodies, they should consider refraining from animal products, or if that is not reasonable for their lifestyle, consider reducing the amount of animal products in their diets. Finding a local farm and ensuring that the farmer endorses organic products can also serve as an alternative. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, organic food is defined as “food produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones”(National Agricultural Library). A “comprehensive meta-analysis on organic foods” done by Carlo Leifort, PhD at Newcastle University, tested 343 studies and confirmed that organic foods have an increased amount of antioxidants and a reduced amount of toxic pesticides, thus confirming that organic food has several health
