Factory Farming By: Dayton Evans
Factory Farming is a very controversial topic. Factory Farming “is a large, industrial operation that raises large numbers of animals for food. Over 99% of farm animals in the U.S. are raised in factory farms, which focus on profit and efficiency at the expense of animal welfare”. While factory farming brings many problems such as food safety risks, abusing antibiotic, and replacing independent farmers. This type of farming helps increase food production, lowers business costs, encourages technological development, and ETC. Which in return helps the public in a greater good. Food safety risks caused by factory farming come in a wide variety. Ranging from high animal death rates to less nutrition

For example, factory farming is very efficient. By using less space the farmer actually saves money when factory farming, making the profit from selling the produce greater. Also, factory farming allows development of hybrid plants that are disease resistant. By plants becoming disease resistant the animals that eat the plants are becoming less prone to disease. This then helps the consumer who eats the animal because they are eating disease resistant food that allows them to have a better percentage of not catching harmful diseases. Factory farming also helps lengthens food availability and shelf life. With factory farming increasing products’ shelf life the value if the product increases. Well as it is efficient it is also inexpensive for farmers to use. Being inexpensive helps the farmer and consumer because prices for the resources to produce and product itself becomes cheaper and more affordable to the public. Also, it allows both producer and consumer to gain financially and improves the economy. Since factory farming is less dependent on manual labor it frees farmers from labor restrictions, this allows farmers to afford to hire workers trained in specialized tasks which then help the farmer produce …show more content…
Many farmers are to blame for the abuse of the animals not the process. Factory farming indirectly helps the public better themselves by stimulation the economy and giving those in need of work jobs, also the process of factory farming has the potential to be more humane than how it is used. Without the proper regulation and supervision the abuse of the animals rises. This is why many feel that factory farming should be throw away and forgotten. But it is very helpful in many ways. Factory farming allows many to have jobs in places where many jobs are stable and an opening for an already filled job is very unlikely. Also, Factory farming if used properly can be “natural” for animals. Farmers do not have to abuse the animals nor inject them with antibiotics to make them grow unnaturally large muscle. Factory farming improves the economy, and allows the opportunity for technological advancements to happen. This type of farming should be kept and enhanced so it can feel morally right instead of
When it comes to the pros and cons of factory farming, according to a non-profit organization called Farm Sanctuary, the cons definitely outweigh the pros. Food production in the United States today is dominated by factory farms, and their treatment of animals has been downright abusive. The usual farm consists of small, hugely overpopulated living spaces for the animals, and they are considered commodities to get more money rather than a living animal. Almost all of the animals undergo extreme amounts of mutilation at the hands of the farm workers and they usually cause chronic and/or extreme amounts of pain to the animals because they are usually done without any form of pain relief for the animals. All of this abuse towards the animals is all so the farmers can maximize the output of the products they get from the animals, and the animals’ bodies cannot support the overgrowth and they usually form painful, debilitating deformities from it. The areas in and around these large farms are generally extremely polluted from the extreme
Factory farming is where animals are packed as closely together as attainable, most never see or feel the sunlight, able to get fresh air or even able to turn around. These terrible conditions have serious effects on the animals physically and mentally. Illness spreads and fights break out between animals. This worldwide epidemic known as factory farming began when greedy people began to modify farms to maximise profit for themselves, but because of this, it not only has a terrible impact on animals but

Many will say factory farming can be efficient, which it can be because “with the use of factory farms, the prices of food has drastically dropped.” (greengarageblog.org) and “the main reason for this is that food are being processed and produced at a faster rate by employing efficient processes.” (greengarageblog.org) Factory farming is also considered efficient because of livestock being raised in small confined spaces which gives more space to be utilized. this makes the cost of land go down because of the smaller amount of space they have to buy. Also factory farming uses high tech machinery to replace the manual labor that farmers would have to do. the machinery leaves little jobs open so the most fitting person would get the job. farmers will then be able to hire better workers. Trying to better the situation on disease carrying food with the cost of food being cheaper through factory farming, it gives farmers more money to grow and raise a larger variety of food. The advancements in bio technology also has led to the creation of hybrid plants that can resist
There are multiple ways to help reduce the polluting effects of factory farming. People can make a difference by simply avoiding factory farmed products, reducing their animal product intake, or by going either pescetarian, vegetarian, or vegan. Those concerned with the polluting effects of factory farming can also make a difference by encouraging others to eat less animal products, raising awareness towards animal and worker conditions in factory farms, supporting farm animal sanctuaries, and signing petitions to end factory farming. It is important for people to become involved in reducing the amount of pollution caused by factory farming.

Free Range Farming is good because the animals are healthy which mean we have healthier foods. Free range farming animals are healthy because they have fresh air and they don’t have antibiotic in their body but factory farmed animals does. And also Free Range Farming is good because the animals have happier life than factory farmed animals. If animals have happier life, that’s a good news for animals and for us.
Through the book “Eating Animals” by Jonathan Safran Foer one of the main arguments which Foer explicates is how those whom eat meat are involving themselves in horrendous crimes committed against animals. He explains the way factory farming is and how cruel it has become to the animals that are forced to partake in this process. However, he also explains how people want farming to be humane yet they do not what to pay higher prices for the differences of quality they receive and for the difference of treatment that these animals receive. Factory farming’s mindset is to reduce production cost to the absolute minimum, ignoring or externalizing the closest as environmental degradation, human disease, or animal suffering. This is what they go by which is also the main reason why factory farming is considered to be so inhumane and brutal. Although personally I consume meat , I think that people whom really care about being humane towards animals should not hesitate and complain about the prices since they are getting what they want, a more humane farming or
Although a lot of people think of factory farms as negative things for our environment and for the animals as well. I have shown you the positives to these farms and this way you can take a deeper look to them. Each farm is different in its own way because the farmer is the main boss person. Then the hired hands are just under the farmer and everyone does everything differently. So one farm might have a large amount of feed per day and another might have a small amount. It all depends on the farmer. I hope that you can take factory farms into a deeper meaning

Some people say a number of antibiotics are safe for the pigs. The people would say that it would be good because the pigs when you eat the pig you could get the antibiotics in the body. People will say that it’s better way to the food we eat. Cheap and Efficient is what some people will say that’s a good idea to put antibiotics in the pig. Factory farming says that having antibiotics would be safer if the factory farming with the animals. People would say that it would help the pig and it’s safer to
Furthermore, factory farming can also be very dangerous for the environment. Gale (2013) states, “...the livestock industry accounts for 80% of the greenhouse gas emission, while the methane produced by cattle and their manure has a global warming effect equivalent to that of 33 million automobiles.” By working together to stop factory farming, people can save their environment. They will also have a cleaner air to breath ...
The animals that are raised in factory farms, and the farms are ran just like any other business. According to the article Factory Framing, Misery of Animals, the factory farming industry strives to maximize output while minimizing cost, always at the animal’s expense. “The giant corporations that run most factory farms have found that they can make more money by squeezing as many animals as possible into tiny spaces, even though many of the animals die from disease or infection” (Factory Farming). This is actually quit disgusting that we eat food that walks around in each other’s feces and can attract disease. These animals live a life of abuse, but we sit back and say it’s okay because we will eventually eat them. “Antibiotics are used to make animals grow faster and to keep them alive in the unsanitary conditions. Research shows that factory farms widespread use of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic-resistant bacteria that threatens human health” (Factory Farming). These animals aren’t treated with proper care and we act as if they are machines. Chickens for example, become so big and distorted that their legs can longer support them. Eventually they die because they can longer walk to get food or water. According to Factory Farming, most of these animals have been genetically manipulated to grow larger and to produce more eggs and milk than they naturally
Poultry is by far the number one meat consumed in America; it is versatile, relatively inexpensive compared to other meats, and most importantly it can be found in every grocery store through out the United States. All of those factors are made possible because of factory farming. Factory farming is the reason why consumers are able to purchase low-priced poultry in their local supermarket and also the reason why chickens and other animals are being seen as profit rather than living, breathing beings. So what is exactly is factory farming? According to Ben Macintyre, a writer and columnist of The Times, a British newspaper and a former chicken farm worker, he summed up the goal of any factory farm “... to produce the maximum quantity of edible meat, as fast and as cheaply as possible, regardless of quality, cruelty or hygiene” ( Macintyre, 2009). Factory farmers do not care about the safety of the consumers nor the safety of the chicken, all the industrial farmers have in mind are how fast they can turn a baby chick into a slaughter size chicken and how to make their chicken big and plumped. Factory farming is not only a health hazard to the well-being of the animals, but the environment, and human beings ;thus free range and sustainable farming need to be put into practice.
Cruelty toward animals, huge economic problems, and major health concerns are just three reasons why factory farming should be banned worldwide. Many people argue that factory farming is the only way to meet growing demands for food in the world today. However, factory farming is just not necessary, especially when it comes down to killing innocent animals in order to feed people. A way to put an end to the factory farming system is by buying our food from smaller, sustainable farms. These businesses still aim to profit from their labor, but that’s not their only objective. (The Issues: Factory Farming, n.d.) They simply will not sacrifice the health of the land or the quality of food simply to make a few extra dollars.
