Video modeling has become widely popular over the past few years. With the rise in autism spectrum disorder, instructional tools that have been proven to work are needed in the classroom and at home to help assist students with ASD to develop the skills that are needed to communicate and function in society. According to the CDC, approximately 1 in 68 children have been diagnosed with ASD (www.cdc.gov). Early intervention of autism has been shown to greatly improve communication skills and appropriate behaviors. There are many tools that have been proven effectively in the intervention of children with ASD, and video modeling is one of the tools that has been shown to be effective in teaching imitation, play, and social skills (Cardon, Guidmond, & Smith-Treadwell, 2015)
In training children with ASD, the teacher or parent needs to first look at what the targeted behaviors are for that specific child. When the behavior is detected, the video model can be adapted to fit the need of the child. The video model is a training technique that has been used for the past 40 years, but has become more adaptable to the individual child over the past decade (Cardon, Guimond, & Smith-Treadwell, 2015). Video modeling can be a camcorder, IPad, smartphone, or a computer. The video modeling allows the student to focus on the sensory issue being taught without the social interactions that come with vivo modeling. Children are typically interested in audio-visual tools such as the IPad and smartphones, and watching social stories and behavior modifications on them may result in intrinsic reinforcement (Scheflen, Freeman, & Paparella, 2012). As with anything, I do think there are times that personal interaction needs to happen. We can teach the student all day long about social and behavioral skills, but they also need to be able to put those skills to use. I get excited when my students learn new things and become socially accepted by their peers. I want them to have all the tools possible to learn to communication appropriately with others. As an educator it is my job to make certain that those students have those proper tools to become successful. As it states in Phillipians 1:9, it is “through love that love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent (ESV),” I do believe that we need to apply this to everything in our lives.
