Common’s “Retrospect for Life” is a personal account of the issue of abortion from the parents’ point of view. It denotes the emotion and decision making that comes along with making that decision to liquidize such a young soul and the effects it has on the conceivers. Common settles on his view that abortion was convenient at the time, but when he looks back on his decision he is living in complete guilt because of one of his stupid mistakes. In Common’s song he admitted that he created the child irresponsibly and he wasn’t aware that he was able to make a girl pregnant at his age. Common may have went through the decision of abortion for his son because he thought that he wasn’t old enough or physical so he didn’t have a heartbeat and it was okay to abort. Abortion is a barricaded decision that survives in the very back of our thoughts, but when it’s convenient it comes forth to the light.
Abortion; is the intentional killing of a fetus which usually stems from the result of an unintended pregnancy, instead of being prepared to take care of the child, couples take the easy route. Abortion is completed at it’s early stages of gestation, a study was conducted, “the Contraceptive CHOICE Project, in which women at risk of unintended pregnancy in the St. Louis, Missouri, region received a reversible contraceptive method of their choice for up to 3 years at no cost”, which is a good clinical research opportunity simply because a lot of people don’t have access to contraceptives to prevent their multiple pregnancies back to back (Allen 75). Abortion, like any other medical procedure, carries some risks. When one considers, however, that “the risk of death associated with childbirth is about 10 times as high as that associated with abortion” (“Know the Facts”), the threat of abortion suddenly does not seem as perilous. Additionally, contrary to popular misconception, abortion does not contribute to future infertility or development of breast cancer. It is therefore safer and more prudent to have an abortion than an unwanted pregnancy.

This quote lets the reader identify with it being okay to feel conflicted about abortion. It seems that often people feel they have to choose sides in the abortion debate. However, Quindlen allows her audience to find comfort and acceptance and not really knowing what they would do if ever faced with this decision. She uses a balance of real life examples that she has experienced and witnessed. Most of her examples touch the reader deep down inside so that they are left feeling as if they were a fly on the wall when these things were going on.
In Judith Jarvis Thompson’s article “A Defense of Abortion” she explores the different arguments against abortion presented by Pro –Life activists, and then attempts to refute these notions using different analogies or made up “for instances” to help argue her point that women do have the right to get an abortion. She explains why abortion is morally permissible using different circumstances of becoming pregnant, such as rape or unplanned pregnancy.
The most common conflicts that cause a woman to get an abortion are based on their own personal responsibilities. Sixteen percent of women, who get abortions, believe that their life would be changed too much to acquire a child. Twenty-one percent of expectant mothers feel that they are not ready for the responsibility to care for an adolescent. Few as twelve percent have complications with relationships or are unmarried. Sarah lost her life because in that era you could not openly discuss the issue of abortion, and Sessions was praised because he pushed for the abortion and would not bring a bastard child in the world.
