Dance and cheerleading are very similar activities gaining popularity in our world today. Both activities are performed by high school teams, as well as independent teams. In addition, both of these activities offer a variety of performance options. Dance and cheerleading can be pursued on the competitive, recreational, and professional levels, which offer a wide array of choices for every performer. Whether performing for thousands of spectators at a NFL game, or performing for a few hundred people in a local dance recital, dance and cheerleading have their own collations and contrarieties. The movement of dancers is generally more flowing and acrobatic. On the other hand, the movement of cheerleaders is mostly comprised of sharp action and stunts. Cheers and stunts are mainly used by cheerleaders to create excitement among audiences. Cheerleaders keep the same facial expression, a smile, on their faces a majority of the time. Furthermore, cheerleaders perform many different stunts to impress the audience. These stunts include flips, handsprings, jumps, and other various tricks. A combination of the tricks and stunts are put together as a routine, and are then performed to music. On the other hand, dance routines are made up of turns, kicks, leaps, and other flowing movements. These movements performed by dancers flow together to create one constant movement to a piece of music. Cheerleading is technical in the stunting aspect. The stunts must be done exactly how they are taught or else someone could be dropped and injured. Dance, on the other hand, is technical in different aspects. Dancers learn technique which consists of hip turnout, knee straightening, feet turnout, and ankle pointing. Without the disciplines and technique used in cheerleading and dancing, both activities would not be as strongly suited. For those who wish to perform on the professional level, they must follow safety procedures and stay faithful to the techniques of their activity. Following these principles, would help the performers to have long careers. In most cases, the career of one of these performers lasts until he or she is in his or her late thirties or is physically unable to continue in their individual activity.
