Daily children are enduring abuse and neglect from the ones the love, family. Almost everyone believes that family is an important part of your life. Family are to protect, defend, and love at all costs. There are different types of families that range from extended and nuclear families to single parent family homes. Families are viewed as social institutions that consist of love and gentleness but sometimes problems can occur within these families. The problems vary from divorce, violence, neglect, and abuse. Violence in families is a form of social injustice. This social injustice goes unreported in families, but it is actually quite common. Specifically, assaults such as beatings and stabbings. Financial issues of families sometimes cause stress. Introduction to Social Work and Social Welfare: Empowering People states that mothers are more likely to abuse children because mothers spend more time with their children than the fathers (Zastrow 194). The traditional mother’s role is to take care of the children. There are a few factors that are involved with parents who abuse and/or neglect their children. Some abusive parents believe in strict discipline. These parents view the misbehavior of their children as being disobedient (Zastrow 196). The parents are attempting to punish or control their children. People who abuse alcohol or drugs tend to abuse and neglect children as well. Also, environmental, economic, and social stress trigger abuse from parents (Zastrow 196). Sixty percent of families who neglect their children are of single parent homes. The head of these single parent household are typically females. These mothers usually have more than one child and their educational background is little to none. Studies believe the cause of this behavior towards children stem from physical and emotional exhaustion (Zastrow 197). Sometimes child neglect becomes a cycle of abuse because the parents have experienced neglect or abuse from their parents. No one has taught the parents about this issue or even corrected this behavior so the parents only know to repeat the cycle. Neglect and abuse are typically concentrated within lower class (Zastrow 197). Lower class people tend to have financial issues that lead to stress. Neglect or abuse of a child may be the only way a person can deal with stress even though it is not the best

    Today child neglect is the largest part of child abuse in the United States, and almost two-thirds of all reported cases in child protective services is neglect (Dubowitz). Before the 1970’s child abuse mostly referred to physical abuse; however, now it encompasses physical, emotional, and sexual abuse as well as neglect (Compton’s). Physical abuse is when a child is hurt by getting hit, punched, kicked, or any other form of beating by an adult (Compton’s). This abuse will only harm the child physically and though it is horrific and can lead to long term effects it will normally only lead to violence. Emotional abuse is when an adult is hateful to the child by calling him names, and another form of emotional abuse is when an adult is punishing a child in a way that will cause him mental trauma (Compton’s). Emotional abuse is terrible for the child’s self-esteem however they can go and learn that they are important to the world by their contributions. Sexual abuse is when a child is touched inappropriately or molested (Compton’s). This is detrimental to a child but in most cases the child will block this out for when they grow older it is like it never happened which will cause no harm to their mental state. Neglect is when an adult will not seek medical help for their child and will not provide them with food, shelter, clothing, or emotional support (Sullivan). This is where the real trauma takes place on a child. The child will not suffer from being hit but they suffer from starving until someone is kind enough to feed them or they die from malnutrition.
