The central problem facing our education system today is that our policy makers, politicians and educators have forgotten to prioritize education. Education is constantly being reformed, yet these reforms fail because they are tainted by corruption, scandal and secretive political and corporate agendas. Education in the United States is expensive, yet states and the federal government spend more money incarcerating our population, many reform efforts are bogged down by corporate interests and those reform efforts that aren’t are opposed by powerful lobbies.

In order for students to be successful in the classroom, their basic needs must also be met. Sadly. many families struggle to put food on the table and students who live below the poverty line may not be receiving adequate nutrition which in turn impacts their school performance. Free and reduced fee lunches have been provided to primary school students for years. However, these school lunches have come under scrutiny in recent years as contributing to childhood obesity. In 2010, Michelle Obama led an initiative to reform school lunches and the Healthy and Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 was passed in Congress. This bill changed the nutritional standards which schools that received federal funding for free or reduced fee lunches have to follow. Specifically, it increased the amount of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains in lunches and limited the amount of processed, sugary, refined items. Yet Republicans oppose the reauthorization of the bill today. Why would our law makers oppose a bill which makes school lunches healthier? The contracts that large food corporations held for these cheap, easy to produce processed lunches were extremely profitable and the change in nutritional requirements threatened their profit margins. We should blame not only the greedy interests of these large corporations but also our politicians, who are too busy raising money for reelection campaigns and answering to their donor-constituents instead of prioritizing education and our
