Reflection On Teamwork

I met with Mr. Murray initially in person where we discussed the initial background information of his company. Unfortunately Mr. Murray was in Buffalo, New York during the time of the actual interview. I was able to call him though and interview him over the phone. Due to the business of his schedule I emailed him the question before our interview, which meant that he was prepared during the actual interview and it only took approximately one hour.

Mr. Murray saw Management as a leadership organization that gives direction and that it is the voice of people doing the work. It no longer relies just on your shoulders to complete a task. When Mr. Murray stated that “teamwork is the life blood of an organization”, I couldn’t agree more. Through our class discussion and my own experience thus far in life I realized that teamwork really makes the dream work. For a goal to be completed you need many different types of skills. The book and Mr. Murray agree that most conflicts occur in the storming stage when people are still learning to read each other and communicate, but once that part is past it becomes synchronized success. I have found this to be true, especially recently when my strategic management class had to come together to make a presentation for the executives of the Four Seasons Hotel Downtown. It was a very rocky start, but once we were able to get past the storming stage we created an amazing presentation. During the creation process it was the job of the team leads to get everything done and give it to the main person in charge on time and without complaint. I can relate this to when Mr. Murray said that it is the job of the manager to build strong teams and keep negativity to a minimum. At times it’s extremely difficult to stay positive, especially when it looks like everything is going wrong, and no one is getting along. He made me realize that even during the storming phase it is the job of the manager to be the calm within the storm. By being the calm within the storm you can successfully lead your team into the norming phase, but as Mr. Murray stated during the interview this can be a, “daunting
