The societal attitude towards sexuality has always been a covenant between homosexuality and heterosexuality. As far as the historians can trace back, homosexuality has always been outrageously discriminated and labeled against the consideration of contention. More recently, the post-gay era has significantly represented huge recognition towards homosexuality, from being in a behavioral condition to an identity. Over time, homosexuality is no longer classified as an immoral belief instead the focus of this sexual orientation results in a more normalized outcome. This essay will argue that today’s post-gay era indicates a strong societal acceptance of homosexuality being normalized through the changes of sexual politics in several decades. Historically within the framework of sexuality, heteronormativity strongly operates heterosexuality as a normalized form of sexual arrangement. According to Herek (1990), the concept of heteronormativity is widely contributed to the operation of heterosexism. Homosexuality is a sensitive topic and often avoided in conversation. For centuries the human race has oppressed and persecuted others strictly because they are gay, lesbian, bisexual etc. Although disturbing to most of us, these actions still occur in our society today, as many believe that homosexuality is abnormal and disgraceful. One supporter of this belief is Michael Levin, who strongly believes that homosexuality is highly abnormal and thus, undesirable. Although his beliefs and theories supporting this claim are subjective, there is evidence that can support his stance on this topic; we will analyze this claim in further detail and how it relates to his other views mentioned in this essay.
Sexual orientation and normatively defined genders (male and female) recently entered popular circulation as more acceptable. Less attention is drawn to their defining characteristics due to a lessening of interest in their potential to be considered atypical. This is exemplified by Bo’s seamless ability to exists as a bisexual without ever claiming the title of bisexual. Now, society takes an invested interest in sexuality that is perceived as nonstandard. Thus, as per Foucault’s theory, great attention is directed toward non-normative sexuality. That which dominates public conversation enters specific sex acts into discourse, creating new species based on these sex acts. While a succubus is not an actual human species determined by sex acts, new terms defining people based on their sexuality are entering popular dialogue, such as polyamory. Society’s obsession to link all aspects of existence to sexuality is not likely to diminish, so as time progresses, different aspects of sexuality, sex acts, gender, and sexual orientation will continue to enter the cultural lexicon as designations for a new classification of deviant sexual behavior. While this will perpetuate the fascination and oppression of and with sexual minorities, it will give people like Lost Girl’s Bo, a sense of identity. Giving a person a word or classification for their previously misunderstood behavior is a gift and a curse. Freud's most important articles on homosexuality were written between 1905, when he published Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality, and 1922, when he published "Certain Neurotic Mechanisms in Jealousy, Paranoia, and Homosexuality."[1] Freud believed that all humans were bisexual, by which he primarily meant that everyone incorporates aspects of both sexes, and that everyone is sexually attracted to both sexes. In his view, this was true anatomically and therefore also mentally and psychologically. Heterosexuality and homosexuality both developed from this original bisexual disposition.[2] As one of the causes of homosexuality Freud mentions the distressing heterosexual experience: "Those cases are of particular interest in which the libido changes over to an inverted sexual object after a distressing experience with a normal one."[3]
