The article “Students and Homework,” written by Josephine Campbell, describes a very important topic in education. Homework has always been an essential part of the American education system. Although not required in a vast amount of school districts, many educators recur to this resource for various purposes such as a remedial strategy or method of advancement. Throughout history, the concept has been taken from different approaches in regards of the time period and overall purpose of assigning. When excessive homework is assigned, teachers often overlook that this can affect their interpersonal skills. When the opposite occurs, students have a major risk in forgetting the material and its processes. I appreciated the approach that the article took presenting both sides without distorting their views. The article counted with important individuals in the field of education and psychology who expressed their views based on their extensive work of research. I agree with Campbell in the sense that decision of assigning homework is very personal and is based on each educator’s individual teaching style. The article implies how the freedom that many school districts gives to educators give them a greater say in how they manage their classrooms. The decision making about homework allows educators to grow as professionals because they are able to have control and responsibility in how they impart their lessons, consequently gaining experience. In my personal opinion, I agree in the benefits of homework as a reinforcement or remedial strategy because extra practice can often provide clarification. However, when using this as a resource for academic advancement I consider it a way to confuse students if the content has not been previously covered. It is an essential part of an educator’s ethics to make decisions that will best benefit their students. Homework is the resource that is used to support the learning and success of the students. For the same reason, it is vital for educators to be aware of the debate of whether assigning homework is the option that best fits their teaching methods. This article is worthy of recommendation because it provides some very valuable information, especially for students that are on their final semester in the teaching program, because that is the time where they have greater control of the classroom. The emphasis on homework has slowly escalated since the launch of Sputnik in the 1950’s (Ratnesar 313). "Sputnik" was a Russian satellite sent into outer space in 1957. The Russians, not Americans, were the first nation to send a satellite into orbit. This caused a nationwide frenzy. Law-makers were inclined to focus on math and science because of the threat of soviet "soviet wiz kids" (Ratnesar 313). As the 1970’s approached homework declined once again, but soon we emphasized it to its highest level of importance.

“Oh my gosh!” is what most would say when a teacher assigns homework. Students don’t always understand that homework can help in many ways. Teachers are not trying to take away a time from your day; they simply want to know that you understand what they are teaching in class to you. Homework has many advantages for you; it lets you help yourself, it teaches responsibility, and also helps ones concentration.
Why should we assign homework during holidays? Why shouldn’t homework be minimized? These are questions that many students and parents have been thinking. Homework is like an extension of school. Why would they want to put more stress on the students even after school is over? Has homework harmed the students more? Or has it benefited them more?
Everyone at one point in time has complained they have had too much homework. Especially in High School. I was always told homework will help me because it is a way to practice and fully master the material I needed to learn. In high school students spend a few hours a night doing what they see as busy work, meaning they do not think homework is helpful, while some students do not mind the work load. The students may feel doing the problems,writing the short responses, and filling out packets helps them practice and remember the material. The reason why I believe the packet homework should be replaced is because students do not always retain the important information needed to pass tests or to get good grades. A question that has come up is whether assigning packets of homework, that defines specific terms, will help students master material better than assigning less or none at all. Rather than not assigning homework at all, students should be given homework that the teacher can give feedback too, perhaps a few essay questions which require more critical thinking rather than a packet of definitions. The main issues regarding homework come down to whether the type of homework, mainly packets, is the problem and whether or not homework is actually helping students improve their grades and test scores.
One of the reasons homework should be banned is because of the unnecessary stress and strain it creates for students. Many students are left pulling their hair out at homework time. Students struggle with homework for different reasons. Some of which are because they do not understand the assigned homework, or they are not being challenged, and quite possibly because they have hit their daily threshold for learning and have no more to give. We all know the downfall of homework: the frustration and exhaustion, family conflict, time loss, and decreasing interest in learning. No study has ever demonstrated any academic achievement linked to assigning homework. There is also no support to the fact that homework provides nonacademic benefits at any age.
