Being a designer is very rewarding when you hear how happy your clients are. Also you have flexible hours, but you may need to work this around clients needs. Specifically, if you are self employed you can move around hours as you wish more than most jobs. Similarly you could work out of home, if you are self employed, which is certainly a perk. There are also some maybe not so obvious downfalls to this career. You will not be decorating spaces all the time; most of your time will be spent communicating, planning, and budgeting. Interior design is not necessary the type of career you can jump into and make a living off of. You need to gain lots of experience and work up your reputation. You could however do fine working for a larger company full time. And of course a larger disadvantage of this job is unpleasant clients. By reviewing these articles this paper will expose the social responsibilities of a ‘product’ designer, by looking into the history and context of social design. This paper will further bring forth the “ideal” characteristics of a socially responsible ‘product’ designer, and look into participatory design as a methodology for the socially responsible design process.

A recent study conducted by Building Futures in association with RIBA surveyed the various demographics of the construction industry to establish their thoughts and opinions in regards to the state of architectural profession today, and in the future. The document identifies the concern that conventional building design is shifting from the architects to the various sub-contractors for a multitude of reasons [Jamieson, 2010: 12]. The most obvious being the increased complexity and required specialisation of the building elements, which will further require a specific workforce utilising other educational qualifications. It is ironic that under this opinion architects have reverted back to their initial scope-depth state, having expertise in all but specialising in none. One could contribute this back to Vitruvius, who prescribed an architect to have an expansive knowledge including philosophy, arithmetic and geometry amongst others skills, effectively indicating that an architect should be a jack of all trades and a master of none.
