Imagine designing a dream home with all the color and space conceivable. This illustrates the work of an interior designer. A "schemer, intriguer, or plotter," could prosper in a career of design (dictionary.com, 'designer'). A career in interior design allows innate abilities of creativity and organization to be practiced in satisfying a client's desire for style and flare in their home or workplace.
The work of an interior designer requires a natural skill to work with people and to decipher what a client desires. "The designer's job is to evaluate, plan, and design the interior areas of residential, commercial, and industrial places." (Careers in Focus: Design.) A few simple jobs consist of helping clients to select fixtures and furniture, supervising the coordination of colors and materials, obtaining estimates and costs within the client?s budget, and overseeing the execution and installation of the project. Some very important details designers must be aware of are the architectural requirements, space planning, and the function or purpose of the environment.
In the past, there have been many famous artists, but few of them contributed their artistic skills to the design of the home. Michelangelo was a famous interior designer who created the most magnificent places for the richest of people. He made quantum use of his beautiful sculptures and paintings to create a rich ambiance. This is how interior design first began as a career. Years later, furniture, draperies, and wall coverings were included. Elsie de Wolfe was the first to practice interior design in the 1950s. Adam and Louis Comfort Tiffany, two American brothers, began a company to create beautiful furnishings and art, especially stained glass.

The highest paid ten percent of interior designers, experts, in 2002 had wages of $69,640, while the lowest paid ten percent, beginners, were paid $21,240 (U.S. Department of Labor). Those who are genuinely committed to a fulltime career in designing know that urban areas and big cities pay better and provide more career options. In small town areas there is less demand for the input of an interior designer. Self-employed designers work for clients at a set, hourly fee, but majority of designers work in a firm for either a straight salary or an hourly fee to clients. In interior design, because there is so much flex given to each designer in a firm, there really are no requirements of benefits, insurance, or retirement plans. The established benefits are completely up to the individual employer. (Careers in Focus: Design)
...of designing interiors and exteriors. That was recognized later, when the University of Glasgow bought many of his water colors. He, along with many other architects, created a new era in architectural and interior design that can still be seen today.
Interior Decorators such as Elsie de Wolfe, Eleanor McMillen Brown, and Dorothy Draper helped to pave the way for the Interior Design profession today. Their influential decisions to stray away from the Victorian style of design helped guide both the interior decorating profession, as well as architects who no longer wanted to design in the bulky and cluttered Victorian Style. Elsie de Wolfe designed during the Victorian movement, however “had adopted the 1890’s preference for Neoclassicism” (Smith, 22). Unlike the cluttered and dark interiors of an average Victorian interior, her interiors were, “in the words of one visitor, ‘[models] of simplicity’” (Smith, 20).
Frank Lloyd Wright was a very popular American artist, but not your typical artist. He was very famous in not only his art pieces and sculpting, but also his architecture. He designed more than 1,000 art pieces in his life, and created 536 of them. He’s built houses, beautiful houses, each with their own stories. He had amazing ideas, ones that incorporated the perception of your eyes, the dramatic change from dark to light, big to small, and all these ideas that turned into something bigger and better.

The most crucial skill for an Interior Designer to have is time management. An Interior Designer can not procrastinate in this field, especially in the commercial area. Commercial designers have a strict deadline to meet since their clients are mostly corporations. Corporations set a project budget for a certain quarter of a year because the design part is expensive and it needs to be planned out ahead of time. Also, the designer may be designing the space for a special event such as a Christmas party, banquet, etc. In their book, Designing Your Future, Beacham, McFall, and Park-Gates state “Contract design is characteristically deadline driven, and clients have high expectations for fast turn-around on designs. This pressure can cause a high level of stress in design offices” (66). This quote illustrates that the main causes of stress in the Interior Design profession are the deadli...

Every person with a job, no matter what occupation, makes an impact on society in some way, shape, or form. Some people leave their legacy by defending people in court, some saving lives in a hospital, and others planning and building works of construction. These planners have a large-scale effect on everybody in society and have an eye for detail, as well as enjoy using mathematics to ensure proper construction. That is why I have chosen architecture to be my career. An architect is a person who designs buildings and supervises their construction. A broader view of an architect is a person who is responsible for inventing or realizing a particular idea or project. Architecture varies from the pillars of the Greek Parthenon, to peoples’ homes. I often find myself marveling over the design of large-scale building projects such as the skyscrapers of New York City. Most of these buildings belong to a myriad of well-known companies such as Chase and Toshiba. That is why I have particularly chosen to become a commercial architect.
Beginning architectural engineering graduates usually work under the supervision of experienced architectural engineers and, in large companies, may also receive formal classroom or seminar-type training. They can make anywhere from $17,000- $100,000 depending on the status of the engineer. As new engineers gain knowledge and experience, they are assigned more difficult projects with greater independence to develop designs, solve problems, and make decisions.
