One of the fun things about returning to campus following a break from school is noticing all the changes that have occurred. This semester, one of the most obvious changes in the campus appearance is the addition to smoke-free zones defined by their blue borders. The question to first entered my head was, why?

On paper it certainly seems like a very good idea. Installing smoke-free zones in front of the doors of buildings would allow the non-smoking population relief from walking through a cloud of smoke every time they wished to go to class. Second-hand smoke is defeated and everyone is happy, right?

The fact is, painted lines on the ground don't really do anything to stop smoke from wafting its way toward any doorway. Just last week I was walking into a building and passed someone smoking by an entrance way that lacked a smoke-free zone. The amount of time it took me to say hello to him while entering was long enough for the smell of smoke to work it's way into the building.
