Humans have a tendency to categorize and group things. Food is split up into different groups, animals divided into fish, mammals, reptiles, etc… Categorizing stuff often makes things easier for us, but not always. Gender, race, class, sexuallity, and Nationality are all ways in which people are categorized. People everyday face inequality because of the group they are put into. The book, “Women, Culture, and Society” by, Barbara J. Balliet, contains many essays that discuss how inequality remains a part of our society and what we can do to work towards a more equal world. One of the most dividing concepts in the world is gender. Although some cultures around the world treat all genders with the same respect, there are many that do not including ours. Women in this country, and many others, deal with inequality on a daily basis. Women in the US generally have less opportunities than men and are even paid less than them as well. This is because our society has created roles that men and women are supposed to play. Women are supposed to find a man to support them while they focus on their appearance and other things that are “Girly”. In addition to this if a girl were to not fit this traditional role typically she will be made fun of. They not only face inequality but also tremendous pressure to fit the role of a “Real Woman”. …show more content…

This is because our culture enforces the concept that gender is strictly male and female. Many times they are thrown into a third group that is really undefined, it’s just simply seen as an “other group” that some look down upon. There’s no real reason for people to view those who are not simply male or female as anything other than regular people. Most who do however do so because they’re afraid of the unknown and what is not familiar to them, which is something I believe should
