1. What values did you admire from the student leaders on the panel and why?
The main value that I admired was from Kathryn Edmund’s, I love her definition of failure. Failure is not trying something and you didn’t achieve it. Instead, failure is bringing everyone together, who was involved in the situation that occurred and each individual would accept his or her own responsibility by owing up to their own mistakes. In the end, everyone would come together, apologize and move on. In the past, I have suffered with situations like this by blaming it on everyone and I would not accept my mistakes. As a student leader, I am determined to meet new friends and encourage individuals, who are on a mission to become future leaders. I believe that both “leaders and members [should] promote the organization’s purpose through a shared vision and not for self-gain, such as achieving a higher leadership position or frame” (Komives, Lucas and McMahon 2013, 97). I am an over-achiever and in order to get where I want to, there is no possibility without the help of my team players. Striving for excellence and making changes on campus, in the workplace, or an organization, should not be done by someone, in order to achieve a higher position or role. Again, leadership is not a role or a position. In order to become a leader, one has to have a passion for leading and working with others. That is to say, leadership occurs in and through relationship and “shared leadership goes beyond empowering others by the leader” (Komives, Lucas and McMahon 2013, 78). I enjoy meeting new people and creating relationships with individuals who uplift and encourage me. As a student leader, I would love to do the same for others and even more.
