Nursing Standards: Improve On The Three CLAS Standards

I will be discussing the three CLAS standards have selected and determine how these standards are applied at my establishment. I will write recommendations of ways that my establishment can improve on these three CLAS standards I selected with supporting examples. The first CLAS standard I picked was to inform all individuals of the availability to language assistance services in their preferred language, verbally and in writing. I do not work for a hospital, but a long term care facility with short term rehabilitation so the manner in which this is conduct will be vastly different than a hospital. New hires and quarterly the staff are given in-services in regards to discrimination, abuse and neglect. We do not have a specific in-service in regard to language and culture and what to do. I did ask some staff members what would happen if someone spoke no English and they came in as a resident how they would communicate with them and know about their culture. The response was from I do not know, to the family to hand gestures. The staff stated they have not encountered at this facility, but in places they worked in the past when there is a language barrier it takes much more time to communicate the basics to the residents. I think a great opportunity for education and training is to incorporate strategies with the orientation process, and quarterly in-services as well as needed. Another idea is at monthly meeting review different cultures that we can pull from the demographics of the area and discuss cultural differences and care needs. By posting information up prior to the meeting the staff can perhaps look up information about the culture and answer questions for prizes. Also serving a traditional dessert or small food items will also make it entertaining for the staff. By making cultural differences fun and interactive the staff will better embrace when someone of a different culture admits to the facility. The section where this CLAS standard is located places that the responsibility for implementation at the highest levels of organizational leadership (Koh, Gracia, & Alvarez, 2014).
