The American Nurses Association (ANA) developed a foundation for which all nurses are expected to perform their basic duties in order to meet the needs of the society we serve. The ANA “has long been instrumental in the development of three foundational documents for professional nursing; its code of ethics, its scope and standards of practice, ands statement of social policy.” (ANA, 2010, p. 87) The ANA defined nursing as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” and used to create the scope and standards of nursing practice. (ANA, 2010, p. 1) These “outline the steps that nurses must take to meet client healthcare needs.” () The nursing process, for example, is one of the things I use daily. Other examples include communicating and collaborating with my patient, their families, and my peers, and being a lifelong learner. I continually research new diagnoses, medications, and treatments for my patients. As a nurse of ...

Nurses are responsible for their own practice and the care that their patients receive (Badzek, 2010). Nursing practice includes acts of delegation, research, teaching, and management. (ANA, 2010). The nurse is responsible for the following standards of care in all practice (Badzek, 2010). The individual nurse is also responsible for assessing their own competence and keeping their practice within the standards of the current standards of care for the specialty which they are practicing and the state nursing practice acts (ANA, 2010). As the roles of nursing change, nurses are faced with more complex decisions regarding delegation and management of care (Badzek,
QSEN is started as an initiative to give future nurses the quality education necessary to provide the quality care and safety for the community (Potter, Perry, Stockert, Hall, & Ostendorf, 2017). This nursing care ties in with the standard of care in competency because QSEN is providing the level of education needed for future nurses to be competent to provide the appropriate care for patients. Nursing process is break down of the care and treatment a patient is given depending on their illness in 5 stages of assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation. The standard of care that can be defined by this nursing care is available information given. Nurses assess patients based on the chief complaint that patients give. The importance of this correlation is the rapport that is builds between nurse and patient. For example, if a patient does not disclose recreational use of opioids and the nurse gives them a sedative, such as propofol, for a procedure, the patient’s respiratory system will decline immediately. This is an example of lack of information given in which the nurse was not able to give the appropriate care and treatment. Last but not least, is the nursing care established on evidence-based practice. An example of this is the use hand sanitizers before and after enter a patient’s room. This practice has become a policy at many facilities to decrease infection. This correlates with the standard of care of following approved

In modern times, nurses are thought to be one of the most vital components within the healthcare industry because of the many different specialties a nurse can choose to pursue. So as we look at the fundamentals of nursing we can see how this profession impacts society as
I will be discussing the three CLAS standards have selected and determine how these standards are applied at my establishment. I will write recommendations of ways that my establishment can improve on these three CLAS standards I selected with supporting examples.
According to the American Nurses Association, nursing is defined as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2016).
