What is body image? A person’s mental image of himself and the way others see them. What is a correct body image? “A correct body Image is being healthy and feeling good about you.” –Octavia “A correct body image is being able to portray how you feel and who you are by the way you carry yourself.” –Janai “A correct body image is those who are happy with themselves.” –Patsy As a group we have all came to an agreement that all of our answers were good, but who is to say they are right, or that one of them are wrong? We feel that there is no such thing as a “correct” body image.
As everyone knows that there are all different types of body images, but what most fail to understand is that there is no wrong body image, or one body image more beautiful than the other. As three beautiful women with three different body images sat down and discussed a few. We came to an agreement that if it were not for media in this day in age then there would not be a negative or positive body image. “If you have a positive body image then you probably like, and accept yourself” –kidshealth.org this statement is true because if you accept yourself, then that is a positive body image. A body image should be exactly who you are and represent.
Appearance is not everything, but everyone should agree that is what you are judged by. To get a behind the desk job you would have to look the part, showing a positive body image saying that you are ready, and capable for the task. If you think about it, most women and men who plays the best role in the love stories, and the sexiest men of the month all have something in common; “the look.” Every one of them has a body that looks like it’s made out of stone. There are three variables that affect the body image one perceives about themselves, the first according to Thompson and Stice is “internalization if the thin-deal, that is, the endorsement of the media-prescribed ideal as part of one’s own personal belief system” (Thompson & Stice qtd. in Ashikali et al. 143). We hear sayings everyday such as “Looks don’t matter; beauty is only skin-deep”, yet we live in a decade that contradicts this very notion. If looks don’t matter, then why are so many women harming themselves because they are not satisfied with how they look? If looks don’t matter, then why is the media using airbrushing to hide any flaws that one has? This is because with the media establishing unattainable standards for body perfection, American Women have taken drastic measures to live up to these impractical societal expectations. “The ‘body image’ construct tends to comprise a mixture of self-perceptions, ideas and feelings about one’s physical attributes. It is linked to self-esteem and to the individual’s emotional stability” (Wykes 2). As portrayed throughout all aspects of our media, whether it is through the television, Internet, or social media, we are exploited to a look that we wish we could have; a toned body, long legs, and nicely delineated six-pack abs. Our society promotes a body image that is “beautiful” and a far cry from the average woman’s size 12, not 2. The effects are overwhelming and we need to make more suitable changes as a way to help women not feel the need to live up to these unrealistic standards that have been self-imposed throughout our society.
As the modern world has changed, the idea of what is beautiful has changed as well. Since the middle of the last century, female adolescents have developed an obsession with their weight and how their body should look according to what is depicted in the media. As a result, this obsession has turned dangerous. Stress is placed on thinness to the point where looking normal is being underweight. Such a body image has become perfection. This is not only seen on television, in live action movies, and in animation, but in real life as well. For example, in the animated film, “Shrek”, Princess Fiona is an attractive slender woman during the day. However, at night she becomes an overweight, hideous ogre (Kovar, 2009). This indicates to young impressionable females that thin means beautiful and being overweight means not being attractive. Due to such images, an increase in body dissatisfaction and the development of eating disorders have put the health and lives of some young female teenagers in jeopardy (Van Vonderen, & Kinnally, 2012).
Body image is what you believe about your physical appearance. Images of beautiful men and women are displayed everywhere, from billboards to television advertisements. Fortunately, everyone does not look the same. Looking at models and movie stars often creates a negative self image of oneself in relation to these images. Approximately 46 percent of men of normal weight think about how they look constantly or frequently (Cloud, 46).
There are two types of body image. The first type is healthy and positive and healthy body image. The other would then be the opposite, unhealthy and negative body image.
Body image is the perception, both thoughts, and feelings concerning an individual’s physical appearance. Research has suggested that exposure to an ideal standard of what it may mean to be beautiful is the norm for the media to expose a woman to. Body image refers to a person’s unique perception of his/her body. This internal view is associated with the person’s feelings thoughts and evaluations. It can either be positive or negative. Negative body image could be associated with low self esteem. This could include low willingness to be involved in activities due to poor body image. Self-esteem is an important psychological need of human beings. It is very essential for a person to have a positive body image in order to face and overcome challenges in life. It helps to boost motivation and mental attitude.
Body image, according to Webster’s dictionary is a subjective picture of one’s own physical appearance established both by self-observation and by noting the reactions of others. Body image refers to people’s judgment about their own bodies and it is molded as people compare themselves to others. Since people are exposed to numerous media images, these media images become the foundation for some of these comparisons. When people’s judgment tell them that their bodies are subpar, they can suffer from low self-esteem, can become depressed or develop mental or eating disorders.
