Are you going to finish strong?” Nicholas Vujicic is a motivational speaker who was born with Tetra-Amelia Syndrome, which is a rare disorder which involves the absence of all four limbs. Even though, he was born this way he figured out how to live a happy life while still in this condition; he is married and has a child, it was difficult but he still managed to go through depression and now comes and talks to students about his struggle. Our school must get Nicholas James Vujicic to come speak to our students.
First, our school must get Nicholas to come speak to our students because it will show them how important they are to this world. Many teenagers suffer from depression especially during high school and we are not sure how to address it, I believe a motivational speaker will help not only the ones who are already suffering but also students and staff that doubt them selves. Each year, 34,598 people die by suicide, which is an average of 94 completed suicides every day. You may not know anyone personally who has committed suicide, but whether you believe it or not several students have considered this. How many students have been taken to your office or Marla’s about self inflicted harm? I know that is confidential, but statistics show that one in twelve teenagers self-harm. Our school must get Nicholas James Vujicic to come motivate our students. Nicholas will show our students that they are just as important in this world as anybody else is. He would teach our students things that they will never forget. Last but not least he would teach our students that taking the easy way out or giving up is never the right decision. Nicholas James Vujicic has accomplished many things in his lifetime even though he has a medical condition and was born without any of his limbs, but he does not let any of that hold him back; we should look at this as an example of how to live our life we should not let any obstacle stand in our way.
The way I can use his example to inspire me is by doing things even though my first thoughts are “no” or “don’t”. I need to step up my game. Although doing physical training outside of work isn’t something I do often nor is it something I’m completely afraid of I need to step it up. I want to hang with the big boys and by that I mean lift what my body build should be able to life. I am afraid of lifting something to heavy or with the wrong form. To show my personal courage I need to face my fear with just education. Some of the medics wouldn’t mind putting me under their wing and helping me with my form and I would be able to improve in that area of physical training.

Studies done by researchers have shown that at least one out of five students here in the United States of America experience or suffer from mental health disorders or illnesses. The attention these youths receive is very wanting. I was more than shocked to find that only 21% of the American youth with diagnosable mental disorders receive medical care and I had to emphasize this point in my letter. The remaining 80% are ignored. The increased numbers of untreated mental illnesses have turned out to be very tragic. The end results have been increased rates of suicides among children who fall between the ages of ten and fourteen. Teens have come to a point in life believing there is no escape, no matter how bad the problem. Teens struggling with depression fail to understand what is really happening, and what depression could be leading to. Suicide is now the third leading cause of death for 15 - 24 year olds in the United States. Causes leading to suicide could be, depression, bullying, or even just feeling out of place. We can all help to prevent suicide. Educate yourself and others, motivate to make a change, stop bullying, and openly talk about the problem. Simply by doing things like this you could start a revolution and save millions of lives.
Many years ago there was a small boy who was woken by a loud scream. Terrified, he ran from his room to find his mother unconscious on the floor. His little sister was screaming as he pulled his mom onto her back in desperation. In reality, he didn’t know what to do to save her and his helplessness was due to his lack of knowledge. She passed away that night. That boy was me. Our past defines us no matter how we protest; it can either pull you down into failure or lift you up towards success. From then on, I was drawn to medical sciences and used that helplessness to motivate my education.
A problem today that should be addressed is suicide among teens and young adults. Several lives are taken every year due to several unknown and known factors. Terribly shameful knowing all the help and hope that’s out there for victims, while on the other hand none of the victims may have ever even known a proper way to seek help (Miller). Risk factors leading up to suicide (also the known factors) include but not limited to: mental illness, childhood issues, isolation and loneliness, bullying and broader issues such as loss and personal pain (Bower). Not only should suicide be looked at as a big deal it should be looked at for what it truly is; “the third leading cause of death for ages 15-24 (Bower).” The problem does not stop when no longer mentioned, that only leaves room for more problems to occur. Teen suicide should never be on the minds of our youth. It’s a dreadful circumstance that happens almost on a daily basis. I chose this topic for my core assessment because I can relate to this topic. My cousin committed suicide when he was 19 years old. The pain and suffering that we as a family went through can’t even be described. Some say that people who commit suicide are selfish cowards who don’t think of their families when they act. Others say that the individual isn’t in their right mind to comprehend what is going on. I usually tend to lean towards the last assumption because personally, I feel that my cousin never committed suicide, his state of mind did. Teen suicide is one of the leading causes of death for adolescents in addition to accidents such as vehicles and drugs. My future career in law enforcement will deal with teen suicides. It’s inevitable. In addition, it’s the police officers responsibility as well as the families, and schools to detect the risk and prevent these suicidal behaviors by these teenagers. Yet, how are people supposed to know what teens are feeling deep down inside? Most teenagers can hide or act their feelings like professionals. Personally the best way to know what your teens are thinking or going through is talk to them on a daily basis; whether it’s at the dinner table or even while watching television. These measures will change your teenager’s life because he/she will know that someone cares and loves them.

Try to envision being born without any hands or feet, arms or legs and given no warning or medical reason or explanation for having that congental anomaly. Now picture how you would live if you could not walk, do daily tasks, such as feeding yourself, brushing your teeth, going to the bathroom on your own, or writing, etc. I am sure you could only imagine the countless number of obstacles and challenges Nick faced just with things like life skills on a daily basis. However, Nick has overcome what most people would say is absolutely impossible, and he is now traveling world wide sharing his testimony, and he gives God all of the credit for his strength to do this.
Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15 to 24 year olds, and the sixth leading cause for 5 to 14 year olds. Suicide accounts for twelve percent of the mortality in the adolescent and young adult group. Young males are more common than young woman suicides. These are only children who followed through with the suicide. For every successful suicide there are fifty to one hundred adolescent suicide attempts. In other words, more than five percent of all teenagers tried to commit suicide, and the number is still rising. It is scary to think that four percent of high school students have made a suicide attempt within the previous twelve months. In a small safe town like Avon, in the Avon High School where you and I practically live, you can see the faces of 22 students that have tried to commit suicide. That is enough to fill a classroom.
Now the eighth-leading cause of death overall in the U.S. and the third-leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 15 and 24 years, suicide has become the subject of much recent focus. U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, for instance, recently announced his Call to Action to Prevent Suicide, 1999, an initiative intended to increase public awareness, promote intervention strategies, and enhance research. The media, too, has been paying very close attention to the subject of suicide, writing articles and books and running news stories. Suicide among our nation’s youth, a population very vulnerable to self-destructive emotions, has perhaps received the most discussion of late. Maybe this is because teenage suicide seems the most tragic—lives lost before they’ve even started. Yet, while all of this recent focus is good, it’s only the beginning. We cannot continue to lose so many lives unnecessarily.
A young, teenage girl sits with her friends, talking, laughing, and making jokes. She seems completely normal and happy, even. What people don’t know is that this is nothing but a mask covering the loneliness that seems to run through her veins, and the unexplainable sadness that never goes away. She fears speaking of it, of admitting the uncontrollable hatred she feels for everything about herself, so much that she contemplates ending it all. The fact is, suicide is the third leading cause for death in people under the age of twenty-five. Our country needs to stop seeing this as a casual thing. Depression, anxiety, and suicide in youth are real and serious issues that we need to be more aware of in today’s society.
