The International Shrine is a brotherhood that is dedicated to having fun with a specific purpose. They are a fraternity based on fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love. The fraternity, which has nearly 200 temples in seven countries and thousands of clubs around the world helps to operate the unique pediatric healthcare system they founded years ago (About Our Fraternity). Through the philanthropic work of International Shriners, transportation and free medical care are provided for those children that meet the qualifications, which in turn remove a huge financial burden from the family.
The International Shriners founded the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children (SHC) in 1922. The SHC began as one hospital located in Shreveport, Louisiana. This hospital only provided general orthopedic care (Shriner's Hospitals for Children).
Today, the SHC has facilities located all over North America. Across the continent, there are twenty-two SHC located in three different countries. Twenty of the hospitals are located in the United States. One hospital is located in Mexico, as well as one in Canada. The location closest to North Carolina is in Greenville, South Carolina. This particular hospital only provides general orthopedic care (Shriner's Hospitals for Children).
Different hospitals in different locations specialize in different areas of care. Most hospitals provide general orthopedic care. Some hospitals specialize in burns, cleft lip and palate care, and spinal cord injuries.
