Everyone experiences events that are unpleasant, stressful and hopeful. The way people deal with the situations and their actions are apart of coping. This chapter focused on coping skills and an in depth perspective of the different strategies of coping. The topics on self defeating behaviors, coping strategies and stress management were intriguing. One topic that was interesting was self-defeating behavior. Self defeating behavior is stating something you want, but the actions that precede are making it impossible to happen. There are several different types of self defeating behaviors. Coping is the way people manage stress or harmful situations. Coping is a process, requires planning and may not always lead to a positive outcome. There are two forms of coping problem focused coping and emotion focused coping. Problem focused involves facing the problem and trying to change it. Emotional focused coping involves managing distress emotions. Both forms should be used to resolve a conflict. I usually use problem focused coping when I know I have control over the situation. I use emotion focused coping during situations that I can 't control or situations that are unpredictable. There are three coping strategies which include active-cognitive strategies, active-behavioral strategies, and avoidance strategies. Active cognitive strategies use logic to explain what has happened and what needs to be improved. Active-behavioral means taking action to change the the situation. Avoidance strategies involve the individual ignoring the situation in order to cope with life. Most of the time I use active-cognitive strategies but when the situations inflicts an extreme emotional response I use avoidance strategies. The three parts of stress are utilizing anxiety, identifying internal strategies that produce either unpleasant or pleasant response and developing strengths and resources. Anxiety can be a motivator when you reach the highest peak but it also inhibit success by creating too much anxiety. The body sends warning signals in the form of physical responses, a person 's conscious telling them to change and mental glimpses of what might be happening. Internal strategies are the feeling and the way a person perceives the situations. Everyone finds different things stressful and the way we feel can contribute to our behaviors. People also associate and disassociate a situation. Disassociate is replaying the events in one 's head and thinking that the worse will happen. Associative people step into the situation to improve the situation. Resourceful strengths are paying attention to early warning signs that signal a person is at their highest point of stress and being associated with the end results. It was interesting seeing stress in a more logical and complex way. Most people I have talked to give advice on ways to avoid stress, so it was a different reading about how anxiety can help a situation. I focused on discussing self defeating behaviors, coping strategies and stress management. Self defeating behaviors include high anxiety avoidance and fear of change as different styles.
