Technology and Education
Education is the universal precious gem. It is the vital stepping stone for our students, and their futures and how well we educate our students has dramatic impact on the success of our communities and countries alike. Technology, in the timespan of our education debate, has become a fierce power in our world markets and our creative potentials, and it has equally presented itself as an opportunity to step into the bounds of a new style of education. More efficient and productive than, perhaps, more “human” methods, it can be condescendingly unfeeling. Is technology truly the solution we are looking for to better the educational platforms for our students, or is our classic face-to-face approach to learning the answer we were searching for all along? Answers to these questions are never black and white, but the reasons behind its support are what really make technology a viable A+ for education. Within the past few decades, technology has immensely increased in use and availability. As a result, millions of people worldwide have taken advantages of benefits technology has supplied. In addition to these contemporary people, schools are realizing the possibility technology provides in the classroom and are implementing the use of them in their curriculum. New technologies in the classroom, however, provoke some concerns amongst those planning to utilize their potential benefits; schools must consider the prospectively detrimental implications and effects technology holds to the user whether it be that they forge a skewed and impractical view of reality or that they promote an inability to think independently.
Today’s society is so reliant on technology they wouldn’t know what to do with themselves if it was taken away. Humans are always coming up with new ideas to make everyone’s lives easier but what they don’t realize is they’re taking away the traditions of hard earn work, communication, and family time. It’s understandable to come up with ideas to grow and process crops a lot easier because it’s helping feed the community plus more. Technology has cause many people in society to be too dependent on electronics rather than using the traditional way. I thought not having technology would make it harder to communicate with people but actually did the opposite. Technology has undermined human social interaction for far too long and continues to be a problem among families.
Technology enables students and teachers to have a fast and easy way to acquire unlimited access to tons of information. With all of the useful technologies, the curriculum is bound to change in endless ways, creating more opportunity for learning.
Michael J. Bugeja, director of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication at Iowa State University and author of“Facing the Facebook” in The Chronicle of Higher Education, states that the initial purpose of having access to the Internet in the classroom was to give students the opportunity to conduct research. However, this privilege is rapidly being used as a means for students to not pay attention during class. A poll was taken at Iowa State University where 20,247 out of the 25,741 enrollees were registered on Facebook (Bugeja 1). Social networking sites such as Facebook have had some negative effects in academia such as “institutions seeking to build enrollment learn that ‘technology’ rates higher than ‘rigor’ or ‘reputation’” (2), that there has been improper use of the freedom to use technology in the classroom, that employers and parents check Facebook to see what users have been doing, and that technology is an overall distraction in the classroom.
An article in Time magazine written by David Gelernter in 2006 answers the question, “Should Schools Be Wired To The Internet?” Gelernter uses a beautiful metaphor is his insert when he states,” the fanciest scuba gear on the market-but these kids don’t know how to swim, and fitting them out with scuba gear isn’t just useless, it’s irresponsible; they’ll drown”. That is how Gelernter explain what will happen if we put more technology into schools. They already have the computers and the televisions and the videotapes and CD’s at the school. If we were to add more technology it would turn into the snowball effect that the school wouldn’t be able to bounce back from.
Educators continue to integrate educational technology into classrooms and schools across the globe. Despite Albert Einstein 's belief that “our technology has exceeded our humanity” (qtd. in Makovsky), leading some to believe technology is detrimental to a child’s future and education, it is evident that technology has advantageously contributed to the education system by creating opportunities for parents, teachers, and students to connect with each other and the educational program.
Many people have the availability at home, work, and school to get on technology. Although most people nowadays don 't know how to use technology in the classrooms, because it is just starting to be a big thing in the field of education. Technology can be conveyed as a necessary evil in our life today. It’s considered necessary because it can save lives, and make them easier. Yet it’s considered evil because it can destroy lives on a physical and mental aspect.
