A definitive part of my individuality is my level of intelligence. I’ve always been encouraged and driven to challenge my intellect through various opportunities in my community. Although my endeavors whether academic or artistic have provided both beneficial and detrimental outcomes in my life, I’ve been able to gain the greatest amount of esteem from my commitment to voluntary civic service. In the academically rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma program as a part of eligibility for diploma status, candidates are required to submit 200 CAS (Creativity, Action, and Service) hours performing duties that meet the criteria for each category. At first I viewed the task as your stereo-typical student with disdain and contempt for the seemingly daunting tasks. However, I never expected to have gained a true introspect and regard from my experiences in service. Community service hours are a significant issue to all students around the globe, as they are taking a substantial amount of time away from their lives scouring for some kind of work to do. This is especially a problem for those who do not live near any public organizations, and do not have the schedule to do any work for them. Most students go searching around their neighborhood asking if their neighbors have any work for them, which does not help anyone academically. Thus, most community service hours that are done don’t relate to their academic classes or technical area.
Have you ever wondered why the Tampa Bay area is always so hot and storms every afternoon in the summer time? Living in Tampa my whole life I never thought twice about why every day in the summer time we were hit with an afternoon thunderstorm, it was just common knowledge. Tampa Bay is in Florida, and also known as the lightning capital of the United States of America. Florida is right at the most south eastern portion of the United States and is a peninsula, so the conditions are just right for afternoon thunderstorms. There is much more than just simple evaporation and precipitation going on, there is a list of consistent factors at play that cause the Tampa Bay area to receive these thunderstorms. Some of the factors that cause Tampa Bay to have such a predictable climate are the air masses surrounding the south eastern portion of the United States and cold fronts coming from the west.
The A&P is narrated by a first person who is Sammy. Sammy is a 19-year old cashier at the A&P that lives near Boston. Sammy is a teenager who seems to work because they told him to and not because he wants to. He describes his point of view of everything and everyone who walks or is in the store, and tells the truth as he sees it.
Friday night football - the night everybody is getting ready for. I can smell the grassy field and the sweaty players. It's five o'clock and I'm getting ready for the game. Taking my time with everything and making sure everything is perfect, from every single strand of hair being in the right place to making sure there are no wrinkles in my uniform. As I look at the clock, it says 5:45, I better hurry up because I have to be at the game at 6, and I still have to pick up your friend. I hurry out the door and speed down the road. As I race down the road, I'm looking everywhere to make sure there's not a cop anywhere. I finally get to my friend's house and wait for her. She comes running out of the house and gets in my car. As I go down the road, she is still putting her make-up on, making sure it is to her perfection. Finally, we reach the football field. We run down to the field, making sure we aren't late, but by the time we get to the field, our make-up is running down our faces and our hair is frizzed up. No one is there yet, just the football player's warming up and us. There is Jock Jams playing in the background to help get the players motivated. We start warming up so that we make sure everything looks good.
I believe that being able to assist others is a positive part of life that we all endure. Although we sometimes view service as unnecessary work, it gives me a sense of pride knowing I’m able to volunteer in my community. Being around people who are willing to work hard has affected my life by motivating me to view service as something that will benefit not only the community, but myself and my views on life as well. Growing up, my parents and other influential figures around me modelled the importance of community service through their continual volunteer work and dedication to improving the world around them. Whether it be participation in a well-attended project or persistent contribution to a helpful organization, those aforementioned individuals were formative in guiding me towards a path filled with opportunities for having an impact on my community.
Serving for the community and the school without compensation or recognition is a defining characteristic of the National Honor Society. I believe that I provide plenteous hours of service to my school and community. In my school, I am a member of Interact Club- a club that encourages volunteer work regarding the school and the community. I have participated in many Interact activities such as Make a Difference Day- cleaning trash at the Wildlife Refuge, Martin Luther King Day at Stockton University- helping organizations such as Circle K, and Project Green- cleaning trash and planting at the Atlantic City beach. In addition to these activities, I have volunteered at Seashore Gardens over the summer before my junior year. There, I was able to engage and interact with the elderly by coloring with them, distributing their lunches, and getting to know them. During my first day volunteering there, I had made a friend instantly as we bonded over gossiping and each other’s daytime activities. It was definitely an experience I will never forget. In addition, I volunteered my time by bagging groceries at ShopRite and washing cars to help fundraise for the Absegami girls soccer team as well as making Valentine's Day cards for the elderly, decorating classroom doors for Christmas, and helping my class with a cookie fundraiser. How did a departmental faculty generated 12,000 hours of student community service in one semester? The following is a qualitative analysis of conversations with faculty members in a department that recently instituted a service learning requirement for all student majors. The campus is a large urban comprehensive university with a multi-ethnic student body. Approximately fifteen faculty members were interviewed for this study. While most of those interviewed included service learning components in their courses, interviews with faculty members who resisted or refused to incorporate service learning were conducted as well in order to understand varying faculty attitudes towards service learning.
For most of my childhood, I have always been a helpful person. To me there is no greater joy than seeing another human being smile. Due to this belief, I am always looking for ways to help the less fortunate. But every project that I commenced and completed did not compare to what I discovered through my school's National Honor Society. When I joined this club, I did not know it would become such a crucial part of me through my high school career. Community service is often times done to receive a good assessment on a transcript or in a job interview. I’ll admit that at the start of my Senior year, I only wanted to get service hours because it would help me receive the twenty-hour minimum required to stay in the Beta Club. But after spending time with people in my community and giving back, I learned that helping others is a lot of fun and rewarding at the same time. By helping in my community, I got to know people, learned skills in cleaning and building, and ultimately made my hometown a better place.
Nowadays, it is widely known that the right and left hemisphere have different functions. The two hemispheres are equally important in a daily life basis. Nevertheless, in the 1960’s this was not common knowledge. Even though today the importance of the brain hemispheres is common knowledge, people don’t usually know to whom attribute this findings. One of the people who contributed to form a more defined picture about the brain hemispheres and their respective functions was Roger Wolcott Sperry, with the split brain research. Roger Sperry did more contributions than the split brain research, but this is his most important and revolutionary research in the psychological field. Thanks to the split brain research, Sperry proved that the two hemispheres of the brain are important, they work together and whatever side of the brain is more capable of doing the task is the hemisphere that takes the lead.
Success might be the best accolade for every student who works hard in school, but success is not attainable without people assisting you. Every person needs help at least once in their life and also at least once in their life they’d venture help from someone. After surpassing college, I will consider exerting community services while I’m waiting to be accepted for a job. I believe that my community assist me well enough to exceed college and I perceive that it is time for me to return the favor by just doing this simple duty.
As an educated professional in my community, I would like to make a contribution to society and my community. My background in hours of community service has prepared me for this and shown me its value.
