Movie Review: Warning Signs Of Suicide In The Movie

1. Suicide is defined as the act of taking one’s own life on purpose. The CDC defines it as “self-directed violent behavior that deliberately results in injury or the potential for injury to oneself.” Suicidal behavior is thoughts or tendencies that put one at risk for committing suicide.

2. There were many warning signs notes in the movie, these included:

• Talking or thinking about suicide- she had thought about suicide since Christmas. In the movie, Jessie tells her mother that she is going to kill herself by using a gun.

• Seeking out lethal means- Jessie is looking for her father’s gun to kill herself.

• Getting affairs in order- She is giving away her prized possessions to people. Making arrangements for family members.

• Withdrawing from others- Jessie never went out of the house and did not interact with anyone.

• Self-loathing, self-hatred- Jessie felt worthless, guilt, shame, and

After reading about the suicide chapter in the textbook, I was still a little confused about what suicide really is. But, after watching the movie I started to understand suicide much better. The movie helped me to better understand the signs and symptoms of suicide I have read about in the textbook. The movie allowed me to see the warning signs of suicide and how to recognize them. If these signs were recognize by the mother, Jessie’s suicide could have been prevented. Most people do not plan suicides over a matter of minutes; it takes much time for the person to make their decision. This was greatly depicted in the movie, when Jesse had thought about suicide for months and planned the whole thing. The movie really helped me understand the planning process a individual goes through who wants to commit suicide; how they will do it, when they will do it, who will they inform, and why they are doing it.
